I feel so proud of all the things I've accomplished as an actress, and I have to thank you, Marc, for being my bridge to that invaluable knowledge I receive every teaching session with you. I'm happy to announce that my (Hagen) Exercises have paid off since I've been your student. I went to an audition that required me to use the Exercise "Recreating Physical Sensations" and since I have done it many times in class I knew exactly how to prepare for it.

The good news is I got the job! Interestingly, they did not hire me for the part I auditioned for; they wanted me for the "other" principal character of this project. That only tells me that my work was appreciated so much that they had to make me part of the project. This is a very well paid project and I get to go to North Carolina for a month. I want to tell everybody in this business that preparation is the only secure tool for continuos success. Get busy preparing yourselves, I have been with Marc for a year and I still have so much to grow, but I have a year ahead from my competition!

Thank you Marc Durso for being the mentor you have been to my actress life!

I just wanted to tell you that you have changed my life as well. I took one of your workshops a little more than a year ago and I was amazed. Not only with you, but also with myself. I realized my love for acting. Merely sixteen months later I am enrolled in a school for the performing arts, majoring in Acting. Not only did your class teach me methods I used to audition, it revealed to me my passionate love for acting. You have, more than you will ever know, changed my life. Thank you.

Your teaching is so true and right on target. You helped me see in my acting that I have to see it. Then acting is effortless and a joy. It might have been all the laundry folding at home by myself or the funny things you say that I think about when I get home from class or your insightful emails during the week. It was something because last Tuesday I felt I made a breakthru. I felt my acting ability start to take shape. We all have pivotal moments in our lives and last Tuesday was one of those moments for me. Thank you for doing what you do and for being my teacher.

I really want to thank you for the day I had today. It couldn't have been possible without you, I assure you. I had an audition this morning for a LA based feature film, reading for a lead role. I was next to go through the door and I felt this nervous tinge hit my stomach, so I did as you said your other student did on the set of her soap opera, and I walked around the corner and I did some of the Linklater breathing, relaxation exercises. It must have paid off because I feel it was the best audition I have had yet. The Casting Director had me do the scenes 4 different ways, in which he kept saying: "Very good, I have no problem with that. That was to the point." I cried in one, I was angry in another, etc, etc. It was too much fun, I can't wait until the next audition! It felt so good to have no pressure auditioning, just to be seen is fun! Thanks Marc. Without you, I wouldn't have been so relaxed and enjoyed it as much as I did today.

My acting abilities are growing with every take, I discovered that in every take I can make many choices, and as the days go by, I discover more and more choices I can give to my work, and every scene... You taught me that, you know they are all very impressed with what I can do, but mostly by my professionalism and you have taught me that as well. Thank you.

I just came back from a trip to New York… Inspired by what I have been learning from Marc Durso I decided to audit several classes at HB Studio where Ms. Uta Hagen (Marc's teacher) herself teaches

I was in complete awe with every single minute I spent there because every moment was a moment of TRUTH, and that is something I have learned to appreciate with Marc's classes

Acting truthfully is about finding what's real within yourself, it's about allowing things to happen not making them happen, it's about observing yourself… There is still so much for me to learn, so now that I'm back in Florida I will continue my work with Marc because I believe that with his guidance I will continue to discover myself and with this I will learn to connect the real me with any character that I embody.

I'm back in the States for just a few days from shooting on location in the Dominican Republic on the Vega Film ERNSTFALL IN HAVANA, then back for 22 days on location.

This experience is amazing! I've learned so many things and your voice have been with me every time. You have helped me so much in my growth as an actress, and there are so many things I understand just because you have said them.

The film experience is totally diferent from what I have done before, even the independent movies I have been in. This is a big project so I can say that I'm learning constantly with every take we do. I'd like to write a journal of my experiences and share it with you. They are very happy with my work, thanks to you !!!!

...this weekend I auditioned for a short film called "Mist" that has won several screenplay awards and is currently a finalist for the British Short Screenplay Competition. The scene I read took place between a husband and wife having a conversation in the shower. Using what you've taught us, I was able to visualize where I was (a shower), and reacted accordingly, making the entire scene come alive. Well, I got a call from the casting director today and found out I had booked one of the lead roles! Thanks for all of your advice, Marc!

I loved class very much last night....You make it fun and comedic which I truly can appreciate. And although I want to just jump into the scene work, I understand that it is important to work on the concrete work first. I came home very energized...I really want to make this commitment to continously be in your class for at LEAST 2 years straight. I want it so that a director, client, etc, will not be able to say NO to me. And I feel you are giving us the inspiration, the insights to drive us even further. Your passion for what you do is very evident in your behavior, and I find it to be a positive driving force for me. I also love the positive energy from the other actors in the class, it is a great group of people.

I've been doing lots of audits and trial classes here at HB Studios: everything from improv to speech and its been really enjoyable. I miss your classes, though. I'm not just saying that either; I learn more from you than even the teachers at HB. It means so much to me the way you incorporate the development of the entire human instrument in your training and philosophy: mind, body, and spirit. So many teachers don't. I'm sure that some students don't understand the benefits of the entire realm of your focus, but it is exactly what I need to unleash my maximum potential.

I love your physical exercises and your motivational quotes. Where does all this incredible energy and poetic justice stem from? What is your motivation? Isn't that one of the things that Uta Hagen says is a requirement for a successful acting career... an insatiable curiosity for the fellow man?

I can't express enough how your classes have helped me in my commercial auditions...your words come back to "haunt" me...thank goodness!

I found out today that I'm on first refusal for an industrial with heavy-duty dialogue. It's kind of a "Sex and the City" take-off, and I auditioned for the role of Samantha. We had 9 pages of dialogue to have ready for the audition. It seemed overwhelming at first, and as I read the sides, I started to get bogged down trying to memorize the words. That's when I recalled what you taught us in class. It's not about the words, but about the actions and thoughts that drive the action of the character, that in turn, prompts them to say the words.

Once I remembered that, I focused on my actions as the character, and the words became effortless to remember. I was very confident in my audition knowing that I had done my homework, and as an actor, that's about the only thing in your control! I'll keep you posted and let you know how it all turns out. Thanks again Marc. Know that your enthusiasm and knowledge of your craft is working.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you. I must admit I had some preconceived notions about what this class and it's students might be like. It was and is a challenge. I was definitely a bit intimidated the first day. I didn't think it would be so hard. I have taken several acting classes, including those I took for a double major at a nearby university, and never once did anyone ask me to really look inside of myself. I knew about the "Magic IF" and all, but never have I been approached in the manner in which you presented. Thank you for making me look deeper within myself and for re-emphasizing what I had previously learned. Thanks for making me "fold laundry!" I'm just starting, but I hope to continue and one day move past Physical Destination and Fourth Side.

I'm so grateful to you for teaching and being here...you have set me on a course, starting with Miss Hagen. Where were you when I was studying at the Dallas Theatre Center and had a lecture from Charles Laughton? Where were you when I needed your teaching in NYC, a starving actor without a clue, living on MacDougal St. and daily passing HB Studios totally oblivious. Somehow, I did have sense enough to do 2 seasons at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, take a course from Michael Shurtleff and do a couple of years of soaps, but totally without a philosophy. So often, I have seen actors sell out for a laugh and it was wonderful to hear your convictions that true and honest work may not bring a spontaneous reaction but makes a lasting impression that may actually change lives. Thank you again for being a teacher-director.

As always, class was fantastic last night...Here's the info on the film I booked: it's a full-length indie feature called "Hunting for Herschell."

They had an open call a few weeks back, and were absolutely swamped with people (I believe they said they had over 70 attend). By the time I got there, they had resorted to bringing people in to audition in groups of 4. We were each asked tell them (and the camera) why we wanted to audition for a horror film, then were given only 4 lines to read with another actor, completely cold. I had to quickly process the (Hagen) 6 steps and put myself there with the other actor. In any case, it seems to have worked, because I was cast in the film!

Thanks for all of your enthusiasm, Marc- it really is contagious! I'm looking forward to the next 6 week session.

Just wanted to write to let you (and others) know how much Domenic and I enjoyed your 6 week class in Naples. You are a gifted and inspiring (not to mention quite entertaining) teacher; and we were lucky to have the opportunity and experience of learning from you.

We both wish the class could have been longer, as the more we studied, the more we wanted to learn. Having studied in New York, it was so great to have someone with as much experience, knowledge, and joy for the craft of acting here in Naples! You have no idea how long we've been hoping for someone like yourself to come our way.

You have inspired both Domenic and me to not give up on our very first dream of becoming good actors, even though we are doing something else for now. Hope that you will not forget about us over here on the west coast---Please come back soon! We look forward to working with, and learning from you again in the future!

Learning all the knowledge you have to give us, absorbing every word and exercise there is in your class, and applying it to my work is just the process I am willing to go through step by step. Tuesday night was a breakthough I needed in my life as an actor.

I was separated from what I love the most in my life, "acting", for two months, and I was being pulled away from my eagerness to get there, to be a respectful actress, to love my work and be proud of it, which you could only be if you work hard. I knew I needed Marc's class to find my way again. And I am not talking about, "oh, I need approval, I need to listen complements..." or anything like that, I am talking about knowing I am learning step by step a process I'm sure will get me where I want to be, which is to be a truthful actress.

When you experience the knowledge of a teacher like Marc Durso and believe in a process like the one he teaches (Hagen Object Exercises) you will never want to separate from it. You want to absorb, to extract everything from it. Marc's class is a challenge I can't live without.

I had a breakthrough in identifying "Truth" and "Untruth" on the set of a corporate video shoot, in the principal role of a telemarketer for ATT. The challenges for me were to type at a computer terminal (and I am not a typist), carry on a phone conversation on a headphone in profile to the camera, and slowly turn to the lens while conversing for a close up. There were no lines, no sound, just the ACTION.

Sounds simple enough. I warmed up using the techniques you taught (Linklater Voice process), asked myself the Hagen questions, and proceeded to do such a truthful performance that the client reps and advertising execs were extremely happy. Then the monster of self-consciousness reared its ugly head. On the next take I knew everyone gathered around the monitor had expectations. My focus and concentration were interrupted. The obvious result was "UNTRUTH". I felt it and more importantly everyone watching did too. We all stopped and grimaced at one another. "That was terrible!", I blurted out. Fortunately, everyone laughed. I asked for a private moment did some deep breathing and proceeded to finish the job successfully.

Why do I consider this a breakthrough? 1.Because I felt the difference so clearly in the moment 2. The audience sensed the truth/untruth of a performance. Thanks for all you've taught and inspired in me in just one weekend workshop.

I have gained so much understanding on acting from your first class. It was amazing. I didn't miss a moment and a word you said. I am glad that I called you....I will continue the classes ... which I believe will definitely help me to better communicate with the actors on a movie set....I will not be one of these directors who don't know a thing about acting but throw fancy words around just to pretend their inadequacy. I am a director who studies intensively on all aspects of film making and has an ambition to bring the true art of acting to the big screen and let it shine. So maybe one day you will be proud to have me as one of your students when I win an Oscar for the best director. Haaaaa! I was recently cast for a lead part in a play... My character was a very well known celebrity and also had a British accent. I was thrilled and terrified to have such a challenging role. ...I was extremely stressed out and seriously considering why I was doing this role in the first place....The writer/director of the play was trying to direct the play for the first time and suggested that I find a coach for the role very close to the performance date.

Luckily two people suggested Marc Durso. I called Marc and audited his class. I didn't have time to learn this process! I asked Marc to coach me... During our 1st and only coaching session for that role he changed my acting forever. The number one thing that helped me, was when he said, "...what would she (the character) be thinking about, keep your mind filled with her thoughts..."

I received many many compliments on my performances to my own and the directors delight. Many people came up to me after our performance and said," I thought you were her, I really did"... "you made me cry"..."you were her".

I am glad to be back in your class, and this time instead of the pressures of performing a certain role, I can just relax and know it is working. I'm really excited about learning this process!

Thank You Marc! You are a lifesaver!

...this is what you have been teaching us this whole time!!!!! Thought provokes behavior and thus a truthful Action which is Acting! When you talk to us in class, like you do, lightbulbs go off in my head like FIRECRACKERS on the 4th of July. I also learned during the Extraordinary Object excersize where we had to explain our own objects in our head that nothing is considered wrong if it is a truthful picture/thought in my head. When another actress in my group described her object, I thought that my image of a clear plastic bubble the size of a football field where you could jump around and float up to the sky where you could see city blocks for miles, where you could fly so high up above the clouds like a soaring bird in the sky just catching the next wind to take you to the next city block, was all wrong.

I instead passed my turn over to the next actress who explained a similar object conjured out of her imagination. That is what I call that little person on my shoulder saying, "Your wrong!" Never again will I sensor myself and never again will I use the word WRONG!

So you see, when you explain in between each person's exersize, listening to you talk to the person about their exersize I learn so much. I thank you for being the teacher you are!!!

Thank you so much for teaching an outstanding workshop in Miami last weekend. I am privileged to have been introduced to the basics of the Hagen exercises and the Linklater voice technique by a Master Teacher like yourself. When I segued from my years of performing and teaching classical ballet and modern dance into acting, I found myself working on the stage and on camera without any technique or craft of acting to draw upon. I now understand, from your workshop, that the technique of the art of acting requires the same patience, commitment and daily practice as that of dance. You have demonstrated for me the equivalent in acting of the five basic positions in ballet. I am now eager to continue doing the work daily and progressively.

I am currently rehearsing with the Mad Cow Theatre in Orlando. The warm-ups you taught have been a lifeline everyday of this forty-five hour rehearsal week. I sense a marked improvement in my work and self-confidence. I am enthusiastic to say this is only the beginning.

Marc, I searched. I found. I experienced. I am improved! My quest for something better has 'paid me back in aces'. I cannot thank you enough for the enlightenment you have bestowed upon me and my desire to become a better actor. I have already witnessed the difference in my own work as an 'independent' actor/producer and know that future productions/projects will also reflect the 'new way' in which I approach my craft. Needless to say I have experienced an untold number of instructors in my life. Life is truly an ongoing process of continuing education. But you sir, and the way you present the teachings/techniques of the 'incomparable' Uta Hagen are second to none.

I constantly had a feeling that although here I was now S.A.G., I had no clue of what I was really doing…no matter which weekend seminar I subsequently took or what books I read I didn't feel totally comfortable, nor did I feel that I had a complete grasp of what I was really doing. …I knew in my heart and in my mind that something fundamental was missing.

What I got was what I was searching for and didn't know it...A Process! An acting process. A fundamental understanding of what one is doing as an actor, not just from a commercial or "bit-part" point of view (as we so often receive here in Florida). I have had voice & body classes, Uta Hagen Technique classes. I am ecstatic!

As an actress of almost fifteen years and a former student of The Goodman School of Drama in Chicago, I have finally found an acting "guide" who is not only genuine and true to his art, but to his students as well…Marc Durso has managed to accomplish what some artists find impossible and almost futile to do, to guide his students through a voice and body course, that if there are willing, will take them into uncharted territory…

I say that what Marc has accomplished with me is a personal and professional triumph. I have now, after all this time and training, learned who I REALLY am…Marc Durso has enough background, talent and time in the business to set an example for students to strive toward making a living in this hell we call "show business." He makes people want to be more professional and therefore, attract more industry people from LA and New York. Marc has a genuine love and passion for his work as an artist. He has gained one hundred percent of my respect and trust as a fellow artisan.

I can't tell you how much of an impact your two-day had on me. I am noticing all kinds of stuff I've never noticed before.

I will NEVER again accept as an answer from someone "I did that for no reason" or "I wasn't thinking about anything" for I know now that those things are impossible. We may not want to TELL the other person what we are thinking about, but we're always thinking.

You have a gift and I truly appreciate your sharing it with me. I want more, so if I can do ANYTHING to help ensure that you'll come back for an extended session in the fall, please, please, please let me know. The possibilities are limitless; I see that now.

...your workshop was fabulous! Acting is so exciting and fascinating all at the same time, because it forces us to discover our own human behaviors (as well as the behaviors of others). I found myself, the very next day, watching people's reactions to certain situations, but more importantly I saw how I reacted with body language, facial expressions etc., to these situations. Most people do-and-go daily, but I don't think that they always know why they do what they do, or at least they don't think about it. The workshop helped me to think more about my own human behaviors!

Thank you for the knowledge, insights and expertise you shared with us last weekend. My head is still swimming with all of the thoughts and challenges you gave us...I gained a deeper understanding of what it means to truly investigate a character. One of the concepts I had not grasped before was that of creating a past and a future for the character. I can see how that will make the character and my connection with the character deeper and richer. I have already started working on developing my new monologue in those terms, and I am amazed at how differently I am looking at the moment of the monologue in relation to where I have come from and where I am going.

I would also like to let you know that you have made me take a new look at theatre training. I was amazed to discover how many brilliant film actors have their roots in the theatre. I am taking a new look at involvement with theatre.

At last, I found it! ...an acting class that provides the tools which enable me to make meaningful choices in the pursuit of truthfulness on the stage or in front of a camera... Over the past several years (not to mention several hundreds of dollars), I have taken several acting classes throughout South Florida. I never felt like I was gaining the knowledge necessary to further develop my own craft. These other classes didn't give me much to 'take to the bank'.

Your class is great! Your thorough knowledge of the Uta Hagen technique, your ability to relay this technique to your students, coupled with your 'reality-based' professionalism has provided me with the beginning of a solid foundation and invaluable skills. With the Ten Exercise Class he has given us the benefit of an acting technique that he learned from the creator herself, Uta Hagen...the most valuable thing that Marc has brought to all of his students has been himself. For those students who have been fortunate enough to receive his message, we are left with a profound respect of the art of acting.

Because of Marc, I now regard acting not as a thing that you do, but as a way of life. He has instilled in us that acting is a profession that demands hard work and dedication; and provided us with the tools and knowledge to be better actors. For these things I am forever grateful.

...an "exercise" from Marc Durso’s acting class came to my aid during a job last week. Over the two-day shoot, I was to portray the luxury lifestyle… It was easy enough to be real and truthful since the surroundings were luxurious…But was I ever surprised to find myself tense up…when asked to do a simple action…

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks! This is exactly like the 2-minute private time exercise in Marc’s class. Within seconds I decided my circumstances, what I just did, why… and where…I had expectations, a definite want…

The point is that an "exercise" from Marc’s class which was meant to help the actor realize the issue of self consciousness and divert that energy into focus on circumstances…came to my aid… I didn’t plan to use or of ever think of is as a technique to fall back on. But there it was when I needed it.
