GROUP PROFILES

Two of the more violent groups are profiled in greater depth. First, the Irish Republican Army or IRA as they are more commonly called. Members call themselves the “Provisional Irish Republican Army" or "Provos.” They have been in existence longer than any other terrorist organization dating back to the time of the Norman Invasion. The IRA's reputation for death has been with us well before World War II, and in fact springs from contention for Erie in Medieval history.

Today, the battle is not just between Catholics and Protestants, but also against the British government which steadfastly refuses to give into the anarchy desired by the IRA.

If the British submit to total home rule for Ireland today, with any of the groups calling for such release governing, most observers believe the island would soon become the home of a strong socialist_anarchist government threatening England's border from across the slight bit of water between the two.

Involved with the Irish battle are the Ulster, and various Irish Catholic and Irish Protestant organizations which send support to Ireland to continue the bloody battle. In the last fifteen years, there as been at least one British soldier or policeman killed every month. The outrageous fact is only surpassed by the fact that in the same period, one_tenth of the Catholics or Protestants killed were women or children.

The IRA holds the dubious distinction of killing more women and children through terrorist acts than any terrorist organization in the world. Serious talks have begun between many of the groups and the British, and while it looks promising, a long road of negotiations lie ahead.

The second group was covered briefly in an earlier section, but is profiled here because of its importance. It is the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and its splinter groups Black September (also known as the PFLP _ the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine, in charge of

assassinations), Al Fatah (in charge of guerilla operations), and the Fatah Revolutionary Council (Abu Nidal's extremely violent spin off from the PLO), has spawned the most repugnant and vicious crimes against the world.  For instance, Al Fatal, a splinter group of radical Palestinian terrorists has killed more people than any other terrorist organization.  Black September later known as the PULP staged the Led Airport Massacre killing 26 innocents and injuring 76 others, and as planned by one of the leaders at the time Abu Nidal, attacked the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany killing 11 of the Israeli team and seriously injuring three others. The FRC, an even more violent splinter group, is opposed to anyone participating in a peace process, and is led by Abu Nidal, infamous for his group's spectacular terrorist violence.

The Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim organization currently headquartered in Lebanon was trained by the PLO and sponsored by Iran, has kidnaped more innocent citizens than any other organization in history. Rather than Israeli citizens or any world citizen of Jewish decent being the targets, Hezbollah has specialized in kidnaping westerners thus calling attention to what they call the "imperialist support for Zionism" and "anti_Muslim activities" by the western powers.

GOVERNMENTS SUPPORTING TERRORISM

One must also profile governments involved in supporting terrorism. There are four and they are listed as follows.

Iran, whose leaders provide most of the funds for the Hezbollah.

Libya who, like Iran, has funded almost anyone who wishes to attack Israel, Britain, or the U.S.

Syria, who with the aid of other radical Arab, nations, has funded the killings of moderate Arab  leaders and aided  world terrorists by providing funds, equipment and training camps within the boundaries of their country.

Lebanon, where terrorist organizations are allowed to build training camps and launch raids into Israel.

THE UNITED STATES

We now turn our attention to the United States. The following is a listing of possible terrorists in U.S.

Aryan Nations: A Hayden Lake, Idaho, organization that is one of the preeminent racist groups in the nation, preaching the anti-Semitic Identity religion.

Andrew Barnhill: An intelligent young man with a good paying job in Florida, he becomes steeped in survivalist  religion and the ultraconservative cause.

Richard G. Butler: The Aryan Nations' leader whose goal is to unify the radical right, he loses younger followers to the more militant Robert Matthews.

Christian Identity: This race-based theology, one of the far right's fastest-growing segments, claims white Christians are the true biblical Israelites.

Jean Craig: A Wyoming grandmother and Identity believer who assists the Silent Brotherhood with tasks ranging from soothsaying to surveillance.

Zillah Craig: Jean's estranged daughter and believer in Identity, she becomes Robert Matthews's lover and confidante.

CSA: Started in 1976 as a fundamentalist Christian commune deep in the Ozarks woods, the Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord grows into a military encampment of survivalists waiting for Armageddon.

Randy Duey: A studious, conservative bachelor, he progresses deeper into the movement until he finds himself carrying an Uzi machine gun for the cause.

James Dye: A Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam with a shrapnel wound in his head, the scorn he receives upon his return drives him into the racist movement.

Richard Kemp: A high school basketball star from Salinas, California, he is drawn at a young age to the neo-Nazi National Alliance and is impressed by Matthews.

David Lane: A  Klansman from Denver, he leaves his real estate and title insurance jobs after a divorce and deepens his involvement in the radical right.

Ken Loff: Robert Matthews's closest friend, he is a farmer and family man who follows Matthews devotedly and becomes the banker of the white revolution.

Wayne Manis: The veteran FBI agent whose intuition leads to busting one of the biggest cases of domestic terrorism in history.

Thomas Martinez: A Philadelphia janitor and racist who when backed into a corner between Robert Matthews and the FBI, decides he cannot join the underground and still remain true to his family's love.

Robert Jay Matthews: Founder of the Silent Brotherhood who yearns to lead a white underground to, in his words, "remove the Jew forever from this world."

Ardie McBrearty: A congenial man from a big family, he becomes involved in the tax protest movement because of what he considers unfair taxation.

Robert and Sharon Merki: A middle-aged husband and wife who make money in their basement when their finances fall apart, then set up a counterfeiting and spying operation for Matthews with help from their children.

Robert Miles: One of the leading racist figures in the country, his remarks at rallies motivate Matthews to embark on armored car robberies.

National Alliance: A neo-Nazi group based at the time in Arlington, Virginia, it gives Matthews his principal motivation for forming the white underground.

Charles Ostrout: He blames his lack of advancement at the Brink's Company on its affirmative action program and helps set up a multimillion-dollar robbery.

Denver Parmenter: In two years he goes from working for Ronald Reagan's election to wearing a neo-Nazi uniform at a congress of racists, losing his marriage and child in the process.

Bruce Carroll Pierce: A Kentuckian enthralled with the Western mystique, he moves to Montana where, in less than a year, he discovers the race-based theology of Pastor Butler and joins Matthews as his top lieutenant.

Randall Rader: A backwoods boy and rock musician turned Christian survivalist, he becomes the Rommel of the Radical Right by running Matthews's guerrilla came.

Richard Scutari: A martial-arts expert and ultra conservative religious man, he gives up a secure job and family to become Matthews's chief of security.

David Tate: His parents, ardent followers of Pastor Butler, rear him in the church and school at Aryan Nations, where he meets Matthews.

Gary Lee Yarbrough: A convicted burglar, he finds his religious roots at Aryan Nations and later joins the Silent Brotherhood, becoming the only member of the gang who had ever been in prison.

ZOG: The Zionist Occupation Government, a euphemism among far right activists for what they feel is a Jewish dominated government and culture in the United States.

Many international groups have members within the United States responding to orders from headquarters located in other countries.

GENERIC PROFILE

A frequently asked question centers on the “looks” of a terrorist. Are they different? Can I spot one? Profiles have been developed to help customs and law enforcement officials to refine the objects of their searches. Two profiles are presented.

The profile of today’s international bomb planting terrorist is that of an Arab male between the ages of 17 and 24, raised in the strict Muslim faith is a small rural town (somewhere like the remote Bekaa Valley of Lebanon), and harboring a deep hatred of the United States and a fanatical willingness to martyr himself in the name of Allah. He is not to be found  on the diplomatic circuit. The terrorist doesn’t hang out in bars, is highly suspicious of foreigners, has few if any foreign language skills, and shuns anyone who is not of his faith, clan, and heritage.

A second profile is that of a “world wide” terrorist. They could be male or female, median age of 23 years, upper class, and ideologically motivated. Usually, they are chronically depressed. They are well trained and intelligent.

The terrorist is not an easy one to spot. It takes pain staking, grunge, detailed work to develop leads, track, and maintain files on known and potential terrorists.
