MotivationWhat motivates you? Some of these articles will help focus us on
what we can do to motivate ourselves and others. Many
workers indicate the problem in being motivated is not the lack of leadership,
but the variety of leadership and inconsistency in the application of
motivational techniques. For instance, there are conservative types who play
most situations by the book, and creative types who take lots of risks. Most
corporate leaders take an active role in their area of responsibility but still
come up short, according to a joint study by the American Productivity and
Quality Center and the International Benchmark Clearinghouse. Slightly more than
half the managers at the 105 corporations questioned say their bosses are very
active in communicating strategic direction, for example, but fewer than half
believe the results are truly effective. Widely divergent leadership styles may
be part of the reason. Leaders who know their style, know how it's perceived and
make sure it fits the task at hand can be much more effective, the groups say. |
