DOUGLAS H. MORGAN, DDS
Dr. Morgan is a dentist who has had over 30 years of experience in
diagnosing and treating people with TMJ and related problems.
(Note 5) .
He has written many articles over a 25 plus year period,
two editions of a textbook published by C. V. Mosby and Quintessence, and
translated into three languages (Spanish, German, Japanese).
These books are used in post-graduate training
(Note 6) .
He has taught post-graduates at the University of
California at Irvine School of Medicine for 20 years.
He has been on the faculty of Loma Linda University School of
Dentistry, and directed their first TMJ clinic. He treats 90% of his
patients non-surgically. For some people, however, a surgery
is required to repair the joint. Dr. Morgan has an 85% success
rate. There are long term studies in the medical and dental
literature documenting this success rate
(Note 7) .
Through his research of over 30 years, he has found that besides
pain and dysfunction of the TMJ, ear and related symptoms can
occur. He is the only individual who has documented the effects
of TMJ treatment on ear symptoms such as subjective hearing loss,
tinnitus, vertigo, etc.
(Note 8) .
in the medical and dental literature. He is doing clinical research
at present on the relationship of the TMJ to Hyperacusis,
Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
He is the founder and president of the TMJ Research Foundation, a
non-profit corporation approved by the dental and medical boards to
give post-graduate training in diagnosis and treatment of TMJ
problems, which has been in existence for over 25 years. Besides the
USA, the Foundation has given courses in Europe, Asia, and South
America. He is a Founding Fellow of the International College of
Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics. He is the founder of the TMJ Clinic
at the White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles. The
California State Dental Board has approved this clinic for training
of dentists in the TMJ field. As a result of his writings on TMJ
implants in the scientific literature
(Note 9) .
as well as the courses he has given warning of the dangers in using
the wrong type of implant, he was asked to be a consultant to the
FDA on TMJ surgical implants. He was responsible in part for the
removal of the Vitek-Kent Proplast-Teflon implant system from the
market.
His surgical team in California specializes in repairing/replacing
tempormandibular joints after they have been damaged by multiple
surgical procedures, including alloplastic and natural tissue
implants. In some individuals, the implants of Dr. Morgan's design
and preference of material have been in use for over 30 years. The
implant system he uses has received Pre-amendment Device Status from
the FDA. There are many long-term studies attesting to the efficacy,
biocompatibility, and durability of these implants
(Note 10) .
The non-surgical treatment he applies, most successfully uses
sophisticated diagnostic instrumentation. Complete and accurate
diagnosis is the most important part of treating the TMJ patient.
Twenty referred publications on the TMJ and related structures, two
editions of a text book on the TMJ apparatus. At present he is
working on the third edition of that textbook.
