NL 24.5

23 - 27 April '99

Folks,

We arrived at the Oklahoma City East KOA at 6 PM.  It was raining and the winds were picking up.  We were dog-tired from fighting the weather all the way from Chanute and were planning to just spend the night and press on.  The next day it got worse.  The weather was impossible to drive safely in so we were stuck for another day.  All evening we heard tornado warnings and travel advisories.

The next morning there was a short break in the storm fronts.  We decided to make a run for Amarillo to try to drive ahead of the next group of storm fronts.    A massive storm front could be seen south of us midway to Amarillo.  It looked like a giant tornado leading the edge, and was buffeting us with tremendous gusts of wind.  We managed to outrun it, but just barely.  Several days later that storm would hit Oklahoma City with devastating results.

Remember that shimmy I had going to Chanute?  I had planned to get it checked out in Oklahoma City, but because of the weather, decided to get it checked out in Albuquerque instead.   Had we stayed we would have been involved in the big storm and tornado that ripped through Oklahoma City a few days later.  G.A.s again!  Whew!

Amarillo had really grown since I had last seen it 20 or so years ago.  We spent the night and pressed on to Santa Rosa the next day.  On arrival we set up in a park that was no more than a parking lot.  One thing we noticed as we proceeded west on 40 was that as the countryside changed to desert the parks were just as sere.

I didn't connect Santa Rosa with the famous Blue Hole.  It's a really clear deep lake that is a Mecca for inland Scuba diving.  But since we were leaving in the morning, and it was a little too cold yet for diving, we pressed on without checking it out.
