Oahu and Honolulu Information

A little info about Oahu and Honolulu...

Nicknamed "The Gathering Place," Oahu (click map for larger version) is the third largest and most developed of Hawaii's eight major islands.  Oahu derives its nickname from its population.  Nearly 80% of all Hawaiians live on the island with approximately 5 million tourists calling it home for a short while each year.  Oahu is skirted by dazzling beaches and underwater reefs.  It also used to be covered in native forest, particularly sandalwood, but they were mostly leveled to make way for sugar and pineapple plantations.

Honolulu is the largest city and capital of Hawai'i.  It is home to approximately 1 million citizens, as well as world-famous Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head Mountain, as well as historical sites such as Iolani Palace and Pearl Harbor.

A few examples of things to do or visit in Waikiki and around the island are: the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium, the U.S.S. Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor, hiking up Diamond Head, helicopter tours, parasailing, submarine rides; boat trips for sightseeing or fishing, snorkeling, surfing, diving, or a sunset dinner cruise.  A bit further away are: Hanauma Bay (a marine sanctuary / snorkeling spot); Sea Life Park and Waimea Falls Park, Pali Lookout, and North Shore (home of the world-famous Banzai Pipeline).

A "don’t miss" destination on Oahu is The Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie on the northern shore.  The Center's 'Alii Luau' is held Monday-Saturday and, because of its all-Hawaiian show, is without a doubt the most authentic luau on the island.  Oahu also has two quite large-scale luaus about 45 minutes from Waikiki on the Western side of the island - Germaine's Luau in Kapolei and Paradise Cove Luau at the beautiful Ko Olina Resort.
