TABLE 1. This data compares the annual salary ranges of the five librarian salary classifications. It shows that the total "maximum" salary paid to all 231 librarians as a group is $10,530,157 million. It also compares the total salary paid to each of the five "classes" or categories of librarians. The 103 "Librarian Is" make $4.4 million (or 41.9%); the 49 "Librarian IIs" make $2.2 million (or 22.7%); the 31 "Librarian IIIs" make $1.5 million (or14.5%); the 39 "Librarian IVs" make $1.9 million (or18.6%); and the 9 "Librarian Vs" make $477,486 (or 4.5%). The statistics show that the 103 "Librarian Is" as a group make the most money (41.9%). Combined with the 49 "Librarian IIs" as a group (22.7%), the total of 152 librarians in the "lower-income" salary level make up 64.6% of the total 231 full-time professional librarians in the County of Los Angeles Public Library system.
The statistics demonstrate the significant financial investment that the County Library has in the professional career development of the two "lowest-levels" of salary classifications of Librarians. However, when annual performance evaluations are consistently and systematically done incorrectly and improperly by the few library staff in the "higher-income" salary classifications, the morale of the many in the "lower-income" salary levels is sacrificed by the ineptitude and political expedience of the few in the "higher-income" salary levels of the official librarian Salary Class Specifications.
Top library administrators and supervisors have little financial incentive to make essential changes in their management operations! They get paid high salaries for doing nothing or for not doing what they should have been doing regarding career development and performance evaluation?
