What is a violet wand?
A violet wand is a quack medical device that was invented during the early 1900s. In the late 1800s, electricity was a new marvel and science and medicine thought electricity would provide the cure for many ills and the answers to many scientific questions. At first, full current shock therapy was used in many medical applications. Nikola Tesla, an inventor contemporary to Edison and Marconi, found he could break down electricity into a high frequency charge. His Tesla Coil combined with quack shock boxes to generate the violet wand.
How do violet wands work?
Inside a violet wand there are basically two components; a coil that breaks down the electricity, and a capacitor that steps it up to high frequency. The high frequency current is passed through a gas-filled glass tube. The electricity excites the gas the same way it works upon neon signs, and they glow purple. Then the electricity is emitted at the end of the glass electrode.
Are violet wands dangerous?
No, which is why they are so much fun to collect. The electricity output from a violet wand is static electricity, and no different than the static electricity you get from walking across a carpeted room and touching a metal doorknob. There's just a continual output of static charge from a violet wand. Like all electrical devices you need to use some common sense to play with these quack medical devices.
