Act 1 A “dumb” act, so-called because no words were spoken (juggler, acrobats, animal act, etc.); performed as the audience is being seated. A very bad spot on the bill.
Act 2 A song and dance team, or other more interesting act; performed as the audience is settling down.
Act 3 A sketch or playlet, designed to really engage the audience.
Act 4 A “flash” act, an all-girl dance revue, for example, to provide a solid punch.
Act 5 A big name entertainer to close the first part of the program.

Intermission and Announcements

Act 6 A strong “specialty” act or jazz band to bring the audience back in and get their attention.
Act 7 Full stage act or sketch, usually with a “name” performer.
Act 8 Headliner, the best spot on the bill
Act 9 A “closer,” usually a dumb act, which plays as the audience exits. “Playing to the haircuts.” The absolute worst billing.
