It's that time of year again folks... summer in the city, it's hot, it's humid, it's... Tourist Season In New York City! Thus, I am obliged to bring you my our humble opinions on how visitors to New York can better enjoy their time here, blend a little with the scenery, and make the natives a little less restless. We want you to come, we really do! We just want you to stay the hell out of our way while you're here. I got places to be, y'know. ;-)

Navigating: Sidewalks and Subways

Someone once said that New York's sidewalks are like every other city's highways. And just as you wouldn't slam on the brakes to look at a pretty tree on the Beltway outside DC, you shouldn't stop in the middle of the sidewalk to look at a big neat statue. This is a big, big, big one. Any time you need to stop, imagine that you're driving a car... glance quickly over your shoulder, signal in some fashion that you're making a move, and pull off to the side to light that cigarette or open that map. We will love you for it. We'll voluntarily help you with directions, hand you some matches, smile, and make sure you're having an OK time in your pit stop. Really, we will! Just... get outta my way.

Oh yeah. If you're more than two people walking down the street, please please please... don't walk in a line across the sidewalk. Break it up. Walk with only 2 people to a row. To go back to the driving analogy, for us, it's like someone who's doing 50mph in the passing lane of the highway.

Subways at rush hour (define roughly as 7:30am-ish till about 9:30am-ish, and then about 4:30pm-ish till about 7:00pm-ish for public transit) are the worst possible places for a tourist. If you're out and about at these times (not wise in general, but hey, it's your life, go for it), avoid the subways for us and plan those times for foot travel away from the major transportation hubs (Port Authority, Penn Station, and Grand Central). You have no idea what people will do to make that 5:17 to Princeton. If they don't make that train, the next one isn't until 6:37 for whatever reason, we're not quite sure, but Igottamakethistrainsomoveitbuddy. You get the idea. If you need to be taking the train at this time, please, for the love of God and all that is holy, leave the children at the hotel. Lock them in the room with a room service menu and HBO. New Yorkers generally have no qualms about taking out small children to make that train/bus/closing subway door. Not because we're mean or cold or don't like children, but for us, when we see that closing door, we have absolutely lost our human foresight ability. There is no thought of the next train right behind this one. There is only this train. This train who's door is closing. So I'm making a run for it. I have to. I will probably die if I don't. I'm sure. I will be trapped on this hot sweaty platform for eternity where I will melt into a pool of human liquid. Wait... what was that thump I heard?

a miniature couch appeared in my apartment building hallway the other night. it was the weirdest thing... just this random little... miniature couch...

since technology is what it is, we (me, jen and sagi) decided that we had to take photos. sagi kindly modeled for the size-comparison. :-)

1. the couch
2. "ahhhh, a hard day's work is over..."
3. "and there's nothing better than a cold corona popped open on the couch..."

*giggle*

went to Maceo Parker at Iriving Plaza last week and danced my tusik (that's Hebrew for toosh) off. i'm learning lots of valuable hebrew words, man. "sababa," which means "fantastic." say it out loud -- accent on the second syllable... it's a good feelin' word.

speaking of good feelin', i decided that what we all need is a rip-roarin' good time this summer, lots of lovin', lots of fun, lots of dancing. what sums those three themes up into one neat little package? disco! so, kids, the theme for the summer of 2002 is: "it's disco." i'm using it as an adjective for everything. "oh my god, that was SO disco, dude." abairntchickanairnnairn...

what else? not a heckuva lot. still working with the germans, which is fairly entertaining and still pays my rent nicely. how kind of them to keep me around! i'm convinced at this point that it's for entertainment purposes only. and... i'm the only one who knows Excel really well, which is odd, considering they use Excel for everything. not that i'm complaining. today there was a re-org meeting (ah, corporate america!), and i was trying to convince my friend and boss that he needs a highly overpaid assistant. i can get the dry cleaning, i'll get coffee, make flight plans, and do Excel sheets.

i went out last night and sang karaoke for Jaime's birthday. this obviously means that we were required to imbibe a little bit to successfully pull off the entertainment value of the performance. ("oh, we'rrre gonn' sing again? ok, lemme jusht get anothrrr martini.") i sang Blondie's "One Way Or Another" with rachel and jen, and hogged the microphone away from rachel... surprise. :-D

and now it's friday and it's raining and i'm actually kind of happy about that. i'm gonna go buy "shrek" on my way home from work and make some coffee and roll up in my brand-new super soft sheets and watch movies and read books and write stuff all night. what about you?

alright, alright, i've been MIA. lemme sum up:
  • i picked up some marketing projects.
  • i fell in love with a crazy israeli man and have been living in lower east side love bliss.
  • i skipped the country for a few weeks (finally!) and went to germany on vacation.
so, now i'm back in action in my favorite place in the whole world. i'm still unpacking from my trip... actually, i've got the "unpacking" part accomplished, it's just the... "put away" part i'm having trouble with. somehow i've found it to be so much more intriguing to catch up with my friends, hang with the Boy, and go to block parties than to clean my apartment.

which is what i'm on my way to do right now. i swear. really.
