very tired and still recovering, but one of my favorite moments from a conversation with my brother while he was visiting me:
me: "Well, I really think that James has an aphasia, to be honest." him: "A what?" me: "An aphasia. It's a set of types of language problems." him: "Now why they gotta go and give it a fucked up name that you can't pronounce anyways?"
heeeeeeee hee hee hee hee

most awesome quote of the day, courtesy of Larry:
"The problem with this world is that women think men are smart and men think women are stupid."

my friend Jen has come up with a phrase that is amazing in its simplicity, yet so powerful. a couple of weeks ago i was calling her sort of late in the evening, trying to get her to come out with us. i kept up the usual persistant nagging-- "c'mon, just one drink, it's in the neighborhood, it's not that late, i'll buy you a drink, etc"-- until she said one thing:
"listen, dude, i'm post-pajama already."
and that killed anything i had in my arsenal to get her to come out. who could argue with that? i could picture her in her apartment, already in the comfy flannel bottoms and old t-shirt, wrapped up in a big blanket, channel-surfing and petting the cat. there was nothing i could say.

one last thought before bed...
did you ever try to take out money with your metrocard?
or try to get into a bank with it?
or try to get on the subway with your ATM card?
i do that all the time. i'm also the person who can NEVER FIND HER KEYS even if i've just walked into the house...
oh well. time to sleep and dream sweet dreams. :-)

i had the coolest weekend ever. i know i say that a lot, but really, this time i mean it. ;-)
on saturday, i had been hanging out with my friend rachel doing music and spoken word stuff, and i noticed while reading the news that the Leonid Meteor shower was going to be happening this weekend, and it was supposed to be the best one in like, a hundred years. i called a bunch of people and asked who wanted to go out to somewhere in the boones and watch it, and didn't really find anyone till i got to my friend jen, who said, "yeah, i think i'm game... lemme call a coupla people." i went to the Dan Bern show at irving plaza with some other friends, which was amazing of course, and then called jen to find out the scoop. she said, "well, at the very least, me, John, Fatima and Kristina are down... waiting to hear back from a few others." i was psyched, i figured a happy little crew of four or five would be lovely. we had decided to take the LIRR out to Long Beach, because the beach is within walking distance from the train. what could be better? beach, ocean, and Mother Nature's fireworks...
as it turned out, we assembled a very random group of about ten or so people at Penn Station, and the adventures began. nothing but laughter and amazement the entire night. we caught the 2:45am train out of the city, and got to the beach by about 4:00am, just as the peak hour of the storm was beginning. blankets, sparkling wine, nutter butters and chips. talk of what '80s movie characters we each were, since this was obviously something out of a good '80s movie. (i ended up trading Ally Sheedy for Molly Ringwald with Jen.) group hugs to muster body warmth (it was soooooooo cold), singing "that's why they call it the blues" by elton john only because we all had it in our heads from stopping at the deli on 14th street. someone getting a profession of love via voicemail, which would've been nice if it had been the guy she wanted to hear it from. having steve be rain man and count all the ones he saw -- something like 271... absolutely amazing. beautiful fireballs, tiny little streakers, twins and triplets... just incredible.
on the train home , we watched the sun rise for as long as we could stay awake, hugged at Penn Station and thanked each other for everything-- coming out to the beach at 3:00am, being cool people in general, being alive to see this. i rolled into bed at about 8:00am, smiling more than i have in the last few weeks. the universe was made good again for me. :-)

i saw the most amazing thing on the subway platform the other day.
from really far away, a woman evidently recognized a man that was just coming down the stairs. she yelled out, "william!" and william looked, squinted for a second, and yelled, "harriet!" they ran towards each other, really ran, and hugged and held onto each other, and before ya knew it, they started kissing. like, reaalllllyyy kissing. in this really beautiful, totally spontaneous way, i mean, no one saw it coming at all. it was incredible. the rest of us just sort of stood there and stared, we were all so caught up in the same moment.
at 4:15pm in the office i work in, i get my one and only glimpse of the sun from the office i work in right now. it's my favorite time of day. the sun is setting in the west, and i can see it bouncing around the neighboring buildings through the window across from the section of the cube farm i sit in.
4:15pm. yay!
