Grateful Dead & Related Links

(update 4/12/2003)

Here we have links to important Dead related sites, information about CD covers, downloading .shn files as well as some exposure to our "pan-Pacific" effort. Some of these links are well known because they are the "must haves". For the most part, we're trying to present more of the little known links that are of interest to Dead Heads.

Please contact us to add or correct any links on this page - deadtraders@earthlink.net

Mahalo!

Band & Concert info:

Official Dead site  - Everyone knows, this is the place.

Dead Base

Grateful Dead Discography - A site by Ihor Slabicky. Back in the days of analog trading, Ihor was a major branch on many tape trees. It was always nice to get tapes from him with nice customized covers.

Jerry Site - The best place to find all things Jerry. Nice search engine for setlists.

TunaBase - A great resource for Hot Tuna and Jorma shows

Key-Z Productions  - Oregon's Favorite Son lives on.

Remembering Kesey - from the University of Oregon's Oregon Quarterly

David Gans - the home page from that wonderful guy who brings you the Grateful Dead Hour

Butch Zito Band (now known as BZB). You folks who live in the Philadelphia/Delaware area have a chance to hear BZB live at local area clubs. If you were into the Dead and Jerry, you'll really like their style. Band members have, at various times, played with people like Michelle Shocked, The New Riders, Canned Heat and more.

Their latest CD is called, "Last Chance Hotel." You've heard part of it on Philladelphia's WXPN, where their cover of Robbie Robertson's, "Twilight" was featured as a Local Artist Pick of the Day.

The lead guitarist also happens to be my brother. You might think that inclusion of the band's material here is nepotism. Uh unh (well, maybe a little), but just give a listen. Relix Magazine gave them a favorable review. You will too!

Lost At Last - I don't really know too much about this band. However, they have roots in both the Pacific Northwest and on Maui. Add to that the fact that Phil did some work with them and well, they are a natural for inclusion here. Their site has some music samples.

Dark Star - If you like Dark Star, this might be your place in the universe. A site deadicated solely to the performances of Dark Star. Now defunct at this location, but I'm looking to see if it moved somewhere else.

Pan-Pacific (Hawaii):

Ocean-Spirit - Of course we have to start off with our most famous island inhabitant! Now if Bill would only play Maui on occasion!

BackBone 1998 -  A story from the Honolulu Star Bulletin going back to 1998 about Bill Kreutzman and Backbone. It's obviously very dated but you can get a bit of that local island feel.

DeadHeads in Paradise - Includes original comics by W. Dire Wolff

Stella Blues Cafe - A commercial site for the cafe on Maui where you'll feel right at home. Dead photos all over the walls. Dead show concert posters! I'm just surprised they don't play any Dead music inside. Still, good food and a nice environment - right here in Kihei, Maui! Apparently, Stella Blues Restaurant is now up for sale. Details are avaialable at the website.

Jack's Diving Locker - commercial site for this dive shop located in Kona on the Big Island. No Dead content on the website. However, this is the place that Jerry used for his dive experiences. I haven't been there in a few years. However, last time they were still selling Dead t-shirts and had pictures of Jerry up on the wall.

Lanai Mooring Project - A project to preserve diving sites around Hawaii. The key to it's success, as this story tells, is when the Grateful Dead got involved.

Richard Thompson - this site reviews Richard Thompson's shows. This particular review speaks about the Hawaiian tour and has a short description of his run-in with the Dead's own Bill Kreutzman.

Music Streaming, Downloads and Downloading Information:

Music

GDLive - THE place to begin downloading!

TuneTree - http .shn downloads of Dead, Jerry, Phil and some miscellaneous. They try to focus on east coast shows, primarily in the Virginia area (anyone looking for Hampton?)

Dead Air - A Eugene, Oregon institution! Downtown Deb has hosted this wonderful potpourri of Dead and Dead related music intermingled with her personal reminiscences of her time spent with the Dead Family. The show has been on the air since the early 80's at various radio stations, KRXX-AM, KZEL-FM, KLCX-FM and for the last decade or so, KLCC-FM. Lucky for all of us, KLCC streams their programming and you can hear Dead Air every Saturday night from 7pm - 9pm.

Deadshow.com - A nice collection of streaming Dead shows.

philzone.routeflap.net - Mirror site to download Phil & Friends shows

Nick Burgis - Nick has a few http transfers available here

NYC Heads - This is another site that offers (used to offer) actual downloads. However, they appear to be on hiatus for the time being. The site is up but says to keep watching for more possible downloads. If nothing else, that famous picture of the beams of light where the World Trade Center Towers stood is prominently displayed.

Pause/Record - Spend some time here to find out all sorts of links to jam band music

etree.org - The definitive location to start looking for information about downloading and trading CD's

<mphiles> - Don't let the name fool you. These folks have made available some high quality .shn's

Jambase - More than just Dead. Poke around for a large selection of jamming

Sugarmegs - Music sharing for Deadheads. Streaming audio for other bands as well.

CD Covers

Larry Fox - A great source (did I remember to say great source?) of CD covers. A fast connection helps at this site - or - "Try Wait" as they say here in Hawaii

For Eyes Only Design - Some commercial content, but lots of really nice CD cover designs available for downloading.

Fractals - Jonathan Miller creates fractal designs on his cd covers. Some nice effects on these.

Grateful Dead CD Cover Annex - Jonathan Miller keeps this well organized site updated with links to sources for covers of specific shows. Truly a very helpful tool when searching for covers.

CD cover measurement specs - If you are planning to design CD covers using your own graphics software, this .pdf file from tripledisc.com shows the necessary measurements. It's all there -   2 fold to 8 fold on the inside, tray measurements as well as mini cd jackets.

Art

Stanley Mouse - Mouse's official site

Concert Posters - A nice on-line collection of posters and memorabilia froma many sources by Iver McLeod. Links to the artists who created them.

David Lundquist - David designed the stage set for the Grateful Dead show in Veneta '82. His site displays his Native American styled artwork.

Equipment

Nakamichi tape deck users - Anyone who continues to listen to their analog collection appreciates the quality of our Nak decks. Here's THE resource to keep your Nak nimble!
