Who REALLY is God and what does He want?

God is the Being who created the universe and all that is within it. It's important to note that He always was God and will always be God. No one can "become" a god or be elevated to divinity. That is one of the first lies ever to be told. We know that God is eternal. And He is all-powerful and all-knowing.
We know that God has many attributes, such as being loving, kind, fair, just, holy, righteous, truthful and merciful. God is a God of compassion. And though people can and will let you down, God never will. He has your highest good and best interest at heart. Because of that He has provided us with written instructions, so we can with confidence follow His direction. These instructions are contained in the Bible.
A word of warning: A lot of weird and just plain wrong things have been written about this book. But if you read the Bible in context, just like when you read a newspaper, about 95% of all the weird and incorrect assumptions that people like to argue about disappear instantly. No one would seriously consider taking a sentence from a newspaper story on gardening and then splice it to a sentence from a politician's speech. Though both sentences may deal with "fertilizer" they usually don't belong together. Yet what is clearly inappropriate to do with a newspaper gets routinely done to the Bible by those who care not one whit for telling the truth. Kay Arthur wrote a wonderful book on how to inductively study the Bible. Her book is called "How To Study Your Bible" (ISBN# 1-56507-173-5). Highly recommended.
What God Wants: God desires a personal relationship with each and every person. He provided a way to have a relationship with us and to rescue us from the darkness and misery and death of this world. But not everyone will choose to have a relationship with God. Rather than follow the plan of a loving and caring Creator, they want to do it their way. God is light and life. But many people prefer the darkness because their actions and desires are evil. They avoid the light because they do not want to be exposed. But every person whether they believe in God or not, will one day stand before God's throne and give an account for their lives. No one can escape from that day of judgment. But some people will find pardon and forgiveness instead of judgment. Others will end up in Hell. And Hell is quite real and you don't want to go there. It's a place of darkness, suffering, torment and pain without release. Somewhat like a bad Woodie Allen movie that never really ends. The projectionist just seems to play the same reel over and over and over. Though hard to believe, it'll be even worse than that. (Apologies to Mr. Allen, who really is quite a talented and gifted film maker and actor.)
