What happened? -- Met Ranger John on Friday evening to pick up tools for the trail work. Drove up to Dough Flats to begin our hike. On the drive up we saw a black bear roaming on his way to Fillmore. Began hiking at 7:00pm and arrived at Bucksnort at 9:00pm just as it was getting really dark. The next morning we discovered that Mr. Myers had slept 3 feet from a bear's den underneath a bush. Needless to say we moved our camp a hundred yards to the south.
We began the trail work at 10:00am and started making our way to Ant Camp. We chopped, dug and cut our way down to Ant Camp for 3 hours. We took a leisurely lunch near the creek at Ant Camp to rejuvenate for the return trip. We dismantled two stoves, pulled a million nails out of two oak trees and stacked two cots for the Forest Service to haul out on horseback later. The hike back was nothing short of grueling. It was hot, steep and we were all very tired from the day's activities. We arrived back at camp at 5:00pm in time to start dinner.
That evening an eerie fog rolled in. At times it looked like rain and other times we were expecting Frankenstein to cruise by. Tents went up and bivy sacks came out as we were expecting a wet night.
The next morning was overcast, however, it burned off just as we were packed up and getting on the trail to hike out.
The boys worked hard with a sense of purpose. They deserve a ton of credit for their dedication and for living and acting out the Outdoor Code. Good job Venture Crew Troop 610 - Kyle, William,Matt, and Brittain.
