--Sholes
& Glidden Type Writer, 1874
This machine, produced beginning 1874 by E. Remington & Sons, is considered
the "first" typewriter. There were other machines which preceded
it, but this device founded the world typewriter industry. All modern typewriters
are direct descendants of the Sholes & Glidden. It even had the QWERTY
keyboard we still use today. Although it is not all that rare (probably
a couple hundred or so survive), it is desirable, with values from $1000
(for a black model) to $5000 for an ornately-decorated model on a treadle
stand.
