Coach Pike Comments:
Wilfredo Villarroel finished just shy of the school record in
the greatest 800m race I've seen in over twenty years of coaching.
The top seeds in the division 2, 3, and 4 state finals battled
it out in a race where the top 4 runners could be state champs
in their division. Justin Boyd, still recovering from a hamstring
injury, had to drop out of the 200, but ran a school record 10.6
100m and brought home the gold for the third straight year in
the 4x100. The great news is that Rasheed Lawal, Kyle Percival,
and Sophomore Dante Dunn all return in that relay next year when
we hope to keep that streak aliive. Our 4x200 relay got great
legs out of freshmen Cameron Duncan and Danny Bolden, while fellow
frosh Shae Kermiet also ran well in the 3200. Sophomores Dante
Dunn, Carson Butler, and Steve Dickinson ran great legs in their
relays. It's very unusual to have so many younger athletes competing
at such a high level- good things are ahead for Waverly Track
and Field. The highlight of the meet for me was our 4x400. Wilfredo,
Ben, John, and Rasheed all had significantly faster splits tahn
they had ever run before. I've never had TWO athletes run under
50, and with great legs by the others they ran the fastest 4x400
I've ever coached.
