Coach Pike Comments:
It was a great day for us as a team finishing fourth in a
field of 17 teams. Michael Bailey had another outstanding day,
tying the school record again in the 200 once again capturing
another 4 golds. Dante Dunn did a great job stepping in for a
struggling Terry Tyson, and got the sprint relay teams into position
for another 2 golds. Abram McCoy and Justin Boyd excelled in the
100m dash with first and third finishes in the 100m dash as Waverly
dominated the sprint events. With close to 50 competitors in each
event, just making the finals is a great feat, scoring is exceptional,
and many great performances get lost in the depth of the field.
Some examples are Jimmy Schneidewind's return to form with a 4:48.5
in the mile, freshman Ryan Cotton's 2:11 800, and Chris Pike's
128-8 in the discus. The team is in great shape going into next
week's regional. Our sprinters are the class of the field with
relays that have never run slower than the automatic qualifier
this season. Our distances runners are just beginning to peak
and should be ready to perform at their best for the regional.
Chris Pike and the others throwers just need to transfer their
practice distances into meet performances to be factors in the
regional and potential state qualifiers. The long jump includes
the defending state champ Michael Bailey and Abram McCoy who is
only 1/2 inch from the automatic qualifier.
