Coach Pike Comments:
Our athletes did an outstanding job this Saturday. In a very
competetive field of 14 teams, we held our own despite a depleted
roster. The all sophomore distance medley team of Danny Banghart,
Ben Freeman, John Erickson, and Jimmy Schneidewind finished sixth
as each athlete ran perhaps their best races ever. Our hurdle
group also continued to improve and should be a factor as they
get more race experience. Chris Pike and Brian Byrnes, also sophomores,
both set personal bests in the discus. Dante Adams and Justin
Boyd had a solid day in the High Jump, while Eric Aten and Ben
Meyers soared to a third place medal in the Pole Vault. Jumpers
Dre Benson and Mike Bailey both lept over 20 feet to outdistance
the field with a gold medal performance in the long jump relay.
While we were able to wait out the early morning thunderstorms,
lightning struck our sprint group during the 4x200 as Dante Adams
went down with an injury during the race. The top seeded team, which
also included Terry Tyson, Mike Bailey, and Dre Benson, was running
at record pace when Dante fell to the track during his leg. The
injury necessitated some last minute shuffling of the lineup,
which undoubtably was a factor in the disqualification of the
4x100 relay. This team can back with a vengeance in the sprint
medley as Justin Boyd, Terry Tyson, Brandon Williams, and Mike
Bailey ran away with the gold medal.
