Here's the extra credit project: Create a scrapbook for Huck from the novel. Include pictures (you can draw them, take them or cut them out of magazines), at least one newspaper article that you write about one of his adventures ("Boy Disappears From Finn's Cabin") and include some kind of souvenir. Anything else can be of your choosing. You must have at least fifteen chapters represented in some way, shape or form. Good luck. Due on January 12 - just to give you a little bit of extra time to play with the project. |

5 DUE TO FINAL EXAMS, PUSH EVERYTHING BACK TWO DAYS!!! Can you believe we're almost finished with the first semester?!!?! Bring Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton to class today. Also, bring your literature book to
class to day so that we can find out more about her. |
6 Point of view Regionalism |
7 Naturalism – define it and apply it to not only this story, but
Huckleberry Finn as well. |
8 Finally, realism – how does this work into Ethan’s life?0 Duty (you’ll understand before we’re done why we keep talking about it! Read chapters one - three tonight. |
9 Study guides passed out today.
These will be due on the day we take the test (which will be before
the end of the semester). Reading day in class. Catch
up, work on your study guide or continue to read the weekend’s assignment. Read chapters four through seven for Monday. |
10/11 |
|
12 Symbolism in the book. What
do you think all those rocks are about? Themes |
13 Review the novel in class. Themes of isolation, personal happiness vs. responsibility and duty will
be stressed (‘cuz on Thursday we’ll have to write an essay about one of those!!) |
14 Test over Ethan Frome today in class. (That means that the study guides are also due today!) |
15 Yup, you heard me right, we’ll be writing an essay in class today. We will be following the same format for this essay that we followed for
the Huck Finn essay. I’ll review
it in class, but you should still have your notes for that. Writing in class. |
16 Typed, correctly bibbed paper
due in class today. Please
include your corrected rough draft (ask mom or dad to proofread it for you!) End of first semester. I hope
you‘ve turned in any late work you’ve sweet talked me into accepting! |
17/18 |
|
19 MLK celebration Using the library for research – video. |
20 Video |
21 Video and quiz over library research tools. |
22 Making the bib card. I
require at least 25 bib cards per student. There should be a wide variety of sources, including
online, books, and periodicals. Now that you’re all grown up (well, close,
anyways) there will be no encyclopedia sources – you need to get beyond your
dependency on this source. |
23 Judging the quality of websites. It’s not that hard, yet it’s frequently
overlooked. Pay attention today,
because I guarantee that this will be on your final! (Maybe you could even
take notes!) |
24/25 |
|
26 To the library |
27 To the library |
28 To the library. 35 bib cards (not note cards!) due tomorrow. |
29 More library time for notes.
Remember to reference your research questions PRIOR to note
taking. Although it is nearly
inevitable |
30 If you are working hard in the library, you will have today as well. If not, no library time and back to literature. |

7 Library resources |
8 Finish library resources and have a quiz! (How exciting is that?) |
9 Forming our research questions. Judging credibility of websites.
It’s not hard, but you need to make a commitment to it – don’t accept
everything you find at face value. |
10/11 |
|
12 Short fiction. I think we will read Edith Wharton’s “April Showers” but I don’t have the book in front of me right now so don’t be surprised if this changes. |
13 |
14 |
15 Reviewing the bib card. Remember – that’s where I get fussy – everything has to be absolutely correct to receive full credit. Same with the note cards. |
16 Reviewing the note card. Still fussy. When making the note cards keep the research question in mind. You will undoubtedly need to make more than the required 35 note cards to finish this paper, but try to focus your note taking well enough to avoid starting all over again! For weekend homework…find three online resources and bib them correctly. Add a second card that explains why the source you chose is credible. |
17/18 Note taking for the research paper Use your research guide to help you understand what you
are looking for: 1. Identify your topic. Who/what are your researching? 2. What do you want to find out? 3. What do you need to understand about this
person/place or thing? revisit note taking label cards include bib number (when you have more than one include
the bib number followed by the number of the card ex: 4-1 bib 4, card 1) |

26 Poetry!! (I know,
I’m excited, too!!) James Russell Lowell “First Snowfall” Look what we
found! Metaphor, simile, personification, allusion, imagery (anybody getting the idea that we have to start a list of literary terms and define how they function in poetry? Good guess – I sense a quiz coming up soon!) |
27 Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow “The Psalm of
Life” “The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls” What did a lifetime do to alter Longfellow’s perspective? |
28 Finish Longfellow Stanza form Couplet, quatrain
and cinquain Images as symbol |
29 25 note cards due today! Remember to have the research question each note card is addressing written on the back of the card. 25 “Thanatopsis” extra credit if
you can define it before you come into class today!! Keep working on
your research paper!!
|
30 A brief quiz over the poetry terms covered so far this week. Finish
“Thanatopsis” (no way can we do it all in one day! Another 25 note
cards due on Tuesday. |
