George Gold was one of the 48 single men who sailed on the 1749 voyage of the Irene.
When the large group of Moravian single men and women arrived
in Bethlehem most were married in a single ceremony on July 15
1749 in the chapel of the Geminhaus, the first place of worship in
Bethlehem. The event is often spoken of in Moravian history as the
“Great Wedding.” One of these couples who were married, after
choosing each other by lot, were George Gold and Anna Maria
Rothe. Anna Rothe was from Loswitz (Tosswitz) Silesia, Germany
and was born on October 3, 1725.
