Notes to Chapter Three

The Cosmos: Let there be Light

The Hebrew word definitions are taken from Strong's Concordance previously cited, where the Hebrew (or Greek, in the case of the Christian Testament) word is defined and indexed for each English word of the King James Version.

Many of the "new physics" concepts mentioned here are summarized in my Living Ethics: The Way of Wholeness (dealing with the world view of wholeness). The Trail also covers some of the same ground in narrative verse dialogues. Readers who want to explore new physics concepts in more detail should consult the popular accounts referred to below, all of which have helped me in all of these works.

The much-quoted Einstein statement to the effect that "God does not play dice" expressed his objection to the uncertainty aspects of quantum theory. Despite Einstein's objection, the uncertainty principle is well established as a cornerstone of modern physics. (The correspondence in which the comment is made is quoted by Penrose, p. 280). Einstein's reference to "cosmic religious feeling" appears in his Ideas and Opinions.

The quotation from Stephen Hawking is from a British television interview carried in the series "Whose World: An Exploration of Science and Belief", Part Four, a CTVC Production (1987) broadcast in the USA (1990) by the Discovery Channel.

For a scholarly approach to the reconciliation of science and religion, see papers by Hefner and Peacocke from a colloquium at University of Denver, cited below. Peacocke is also cited in essay four.
