Asklepios,
the ancient Greek god of healing.
This detail from his temple in Epidaurus
reminds us that the Hippocratic
tradition,
and thus western scientific medicine, evolved
from a spiritual/ psychological
concept of healing.
Academies for Unitive Healing, an independent website project, was conceived
· to further the development of the philosophic basis for unitive (integrative) healing,
· to support patients and their families in facing illness, and
·
as a resource for physicians and other healthcare
professionals interested in the field.
These
days, "institute" is the more common term for such an activity, but Academy is
chosen especially to remind us of our ancient tradition of learning by walking
together in the "academic groves," and of healing in special sites
where patient and priest dream together and bond in the quest for healing.
The idea of the internet as an "academic grove" or "temple site" seems very far-fetched to our ordinary frame of mind. But that is exactly the point !! Here is a site for walking together toward the creation of a new frame of mind. Like Hippocrates in these paired images, we may learn the value of looking backward towards our roots even as we look forward toward an even greater era of healing discovery.
