On December 19, 1997 the INS implemented a second type of 'Affidavit of Support' form -
the new I-864. Previously there was only the I-134 to use for all types of visas.
Confusion resulted. None of the government websites make it clear which is to be used
in conjunction with a K-1 Visa application submitted after December 19th/97. The legal sites
just quote the government's, and there were no current personal sites that deal with
that issue. With the exception of Alan
and Elena's. It was on Alan's site that I first read
that the I-134 was the proper form. The only site for that matter that went into the issue specifically.
(There are many sites put up by other couples
who've submitted their applications prior to December that provide excellent information
in other areas.)
Finally, on January 11th, I found the answer. The same day I saw
Alan's site, I noticed
on the US State Department - Visa
Services page that there is an e-mail icon right at the bottom. (Don't know how I'd missed it before that!)
It's for general questions in regards to all types of US visas.
I sent them a short e-mail asking which Affidavit of Support form to
use with our Fiancé(e) Visa. They replied in two days, saying
...it's the I-134.
Update:It's become clear over the last year that the I-134 is the correct form to use with MOST consulates.
I still hear of cases where the I-184 was needed though. To be safe confirm with the consulate you will use which one
they require. Note that the I-864 must be used for the "Adjustment of Status" after you get married in the US.
