*DNA testing (see Bulletin Board Page) showed that the DNA of the BANfathers who participated was identical
to that of the BARNfathers and BAIRNSfathers who participated indicating that they all descend from a single ancestor.
The name BANfather seems to have evolved in the Norfolk area in the 17th century. There were members of that family
who went to London; it is not known whether those listed here were actually part of that family or if any of the BANfather
entries represent a spelling issue.
THE EARLIEST BARNFATHERS
Early records place the Barnfathers in various places in England
(some where we might not have thought to look for them) very early on. Records found so far include:
CUMBERLAND
9 Feb 1581
Christopher Barnefather & Cuthbert
Barnefather, were included in the Muster for Tarraby, Eskdail Ward; Randell Barnefather
& Jenkinge Barnefather were included in the Muster for Walton, Eskdail Ward; Thomas
Barnefather was included in the Muster for Treddermaine, Eskdail Ward; and John Barnefather &
Gilbert Barnefather were included in the Muster for Askerton, Eskdail Ward.
KENT
8 Feb 1401
William Barnefadir involved
in a legal proceeding in which he was the plaintiff.
LINCOLNSHIRE
14 Jun 1243
Geoffrey Barnefadir was involved
in a legal proceeding in Lincoln.
OXFORDSHIRE
30 Dec 1389
William Barnfader, who was
a priest, was given permission to travel from any port in England to Rome.
YORKSHIRE
20 Jul 1356
William Barnefadre, a lay
brother at Kyrkestall, accused with others of attacking a house in Knaresburgh.
Spelling variations to the name Barnfather are much more common earlier times. Don't forget to be creative
when looking for early Barnfather information!
