Bringing the Artist to You

GUEST CONDUCTING - A distinguished, seasoned artist-conductor and compelling interpreter of music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods and selected modern works, Avshalomov is noted for establishing rapport with musicians and drawing out the finest sound and most expressive playing possible from each orchestra he leads. He is available for guest appearances starting in the 2005-2006 season.

Current specialized program categories include:

Three Generations of Avshalomovs, balanced programs from a true musical dynasty, featuring works by grandfather Aaron Avshalomoff (in his original Chinese style), father Jacob Avshalomov, and son David Avshalomov. Forms available include symphonies, tone poems, suites, works for string orchestra, concerti (piano, flute, violin, timpani), and choral/orchestral works. (Repertoire list, discography, and sample programs available on request.)

Living Composer Concert at which David Avshalomov conducts his own works in balance with those of the standard repertoire and selected modern American composers. (Repertoire list and sample programs available on request.)

Chestnuts: Maestro Avshalomov performs beloved standard symphonic works. (Repertoire list and sample programs available on request.)

"Let's Grow an Orchestra," an engaging live interactive grade-school "gym" show with soprano/narrator, built on excerpts from standard repertoire with an original script and Orchestra Song with variations that Avshalomov created for the Long Beach Symphony and School District. (Candid demo recording available on request.)

SINGING - Noted for his highly nuanced baritone voice and emotional, expressive renditions, David Avshalomov brings a master artist's interpretive power to his own songs and those of other composers. He can be engaged for recitals with piano of varied repertoire ranging from art songs through oratorio and opera, Jewish songs, and a variety of lighter material. He also sings his own song cycles with orchestra (Songs of Life/Songs of Death on Emily Dickinson poems; Two Apocalyptic Songs, on Shelley and Yeats), as well as bass solos in such works as Handel's Messiah and Copland's American Songs.

COMMISSIONS - Avshalomov now composes increasingly on commission for specific performers (and for organizations including, most recently, the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Musica Bella Orchestra of New York, and the Santa Monica High School Choirs). His recent focus has been on choral music and songs; he also gladly creates new chamber and solo instrumental works, and orchestral and band music for performance consortia.

"YOU CAN SING!" - David's approach to helping the "song-shy" and "singing-impaired" (est. 40 million in the US alone), folks who have the unrealized capacity to sing but are somehow blocked, who wish they could sing (socially) but need encouragement and guidance. Avshalomov, unamplified, works with the audience as a group in simple guided exercises and gentle humor. The focus is on easy, small-task, low-impact, non-solo, non-showoff group singing, to help people open up and sing along with others in family, social, and religious settings with less self-consciousness. Based on sound vocal methods and guided imagery, this session can get up to 95% of the group really singing something by the end of 45 minutes--and feeling better about it and about themselves.

SPEAKING, NARRATION - A charismatic stage presence and articulate speaker, Avshalomov is available as a pre-concert presenter for concerts featuring his own works (in a "meet the artist" interactive format) and those of others. He also provides entertaining and stirring narration for children's concerts with orchestras such as the Santa Monica Symphony. (He narrated the children's interactive concerts and gave pre-concert talks at adult concerts for his Santa Monica Chamber Orchestra for a decade.)

RESIDENCIES, CLINICS - An experienced educator, Avshalomov enjoys working with talented young musicians, and teaches standards-based clinics in conducting and composition in conjunction with his guest appearances.
