Newman > Biographical Sketch
David V. Newmandavidvnewman@earthlink.netJacob Nielsen suggests that all web sites should have a short biographical sketch of the author, so here we are. I was born in Southern California, and have lived in California (Westlake Village, Claremont, and Pasadena), Colorado (Golden), Indonesia (Jakarta), Michigan (Kalamazoo), and Texas (Midland, Dallas, and Austin). When I was very young, my family lived in Midland and then in Jakarta. In Jakarta, I was a Cub Scout and something of a bookworm. When we returned to the United States, we lived in Westlake Village. I went to Newbury Park High School and earned Varsity Letters in Swimming and Water Polo. While in Westlake Village, I earned the Eagle Scout award, learned to enjoy backpacking and canoeing, and learned a bit of ballroom dancing. I earned an undergraduate degree in Philosophy at Pomona College in Claremont, and spent the summers with my parents in Dallas and Golden. For four years after I graduated, I worked for Xerox Corporation in Pasadena as a computer programmer. While in Claremont and Pasadena, I took jazz dance lessons. I then attended graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned a PhD in Philosophy and played basketball and racquetball with other graduate students. I lived in Austin for seven years, and I think it is the finest city in Texas. After earning my PhD, I spent seven years in Kalamazoo, where I worked as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Western Michigan University. I learned about winter weather and snow shovelling while in Kalamazoo. I also began riding bicycles seriously while in Kalamazoo, thanks to the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club. I now live in Fort Collins Colorado. I teach as an adjunct at Colorado State University. I do a lot of bicycling, and some hiking and photography. |
