Misty Fjords

Misty Fjords is an unspoiled coastal ecosystem. Our ship cruised. deep fjords and viewed many waterfalls surrounded by countless glacier fed streams. We had two US Forest Rangers on board to guide us through this beautiful area. Apparently, nearly half of all king salmon spawning and rearing streams in southeast Alaska are located within Misty Fjords. The forests in this area seem to consist primarily of Sitka Spruce, Western hemlock, and Alaska cedar.

Our rangers pointed out miles of shear cliffs, rising to over 3000 feet. The cliffs were carved by Pleistocene era glaciers. From the faces of the cliffs, seemingly countless waterfalls plummeted into the water. It was quite breathtaking.

Sadly, for much of our time in this area, it rained (and rained hard!). We could barely see out the windows as most of the passengers finally retreated to the lounge area for some hot chocolate and a chance to ask the rangers questions about the area and their summers kayaking throughout the wilderness.
