Metlakatla

Part of our cruise included a stop at Metlakatla, on the western shores of Annette Island.

This is a modern Native American Community that was founded back in 1887. Father William Duncan brought a group of 823 Tsimshian Indians from British Columbia to this island in order to have religious freedom from the Anglican Church (which was requiring the use of wine in Communion, while Father Duncan opposed alcohol in any form). The Tsimshian people live on the Annete Island Indian Reserve and chose not to participate in the Alaska Native Claims settlement (1971) and now are the only Native American reservation in Alaska.

Our bus tour included a stop at Father Duncan's cottage home, the island's cannery, and a stop at their Tribal Longhouse for a dance performance and a chance to purchase some Native crafts.
