From only 1/4 mile away! One of the big advantages to small ship cruising is how close we were able to get to the face of the glaciers. We approached to about 1/4 mile (the equivalent of two city blocks in Chicago) -- the safest distance. The big ships can't get in this close because they can't turn around in the end of these fjords. I wouldn't have wanted to be any closer when I watched huge piles of ice plummet from the face into the sea below with a thundering crash!
