KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten children visit the library twice each week for two forty minute
periods. The main emphasis during both these sessions is on literature
appreciation. Stories are presented in a variety of formats through
a variety of media. Children develop the ability to attend and respond
to the selected material. They learn to interpret both what they
have seen and what they have heard, and gain practice in articulating those
interpretations.
Skills instruction at this age level is confined to an introduction to
basic library terminology, the proper care and handling of books, and appropriate
library behavior (consistent with classroom expectations) A portion of
one weekly session is set aside for book selection. Children
are directed to the "Easy" or picture book section of our library, where
they may select one book which they may keep for one week. While
guidance is provided for specific requests and the librarian is always
available to provide suggestions, an important part of the learning process
is for the child to develop the confidence to explore the shelves and make
their own decision.
Please take the time to share this book with your child. A good children's
book can be enjoyable for an adult as well, and reading the book with your
child will let him/her know that this is an activity you value. If
you have any questions during the course of the year, please feel free
to contact the librarian.
