I believe that art is an argument that the artist is constantly having with himself and that art is found in the process of creation and not in the end result or product. The surface of the painting needs to reflect this argument, this tension that exists between artist and canvas. This is why the surface of a painting, the texture and form, the strokes and scratches are more important to me than the finished painting itself. The give and take of the paint, the layering on and the scratching off of paint, this is where the art is to be found.

I rarely begin a painting knowing the direction it will take. Creativity comes best to me when the mind is empty. With no reference save for a preferred palette of colors and a huge amount of trust in instinct, the painting begins with a single stroke or splash of color. There are no rules, there can be no formula.

Pour moi, je crois que l'art est un argument que l'artiste a constamment avec soi-même et que l'art est dans le processus de création et non dans le produit final. La surface de la toile doit démontrer cet argument et la tension qui existe entre l'artiste et la toile. C'est pourquoi la surface de la peinture, la texture et les formes, les coups de brosse et les égratignures sont plus importants que la peinture même. C'est dans l'application et l'élimination des couleurs, dans l'épaisseur et le relief de la peinture que l'art se trouve.

Je commence rarement une toile avec un concept ou une direction spécifique. La créativité me viens plus facilement lorsque mon esprit est ouvert et sans pensées. Sans référence sauf ma palette de choix et une croyance soutenue dans mon intuition je commence avec un coup de brosse ou un jet de couleur. Il n'y a pas de règlements et il ne peux y avoir aucune formule.

Dave Skyrie est né et a grandi à Montréal, où il a obtenu un diplôme en Arts de l'Université Concordia. Membre de AAPNB, l'Association des artistes peintres de Shédiac et de la Fédération des écrivains du Nouveau-Brunswick, Dave a publié deux livres de poésie ainsi que des poêmes dans diverses revues canadiennes. Dave a reçu sa formation photographique à Moncton, N-B et aime photographier les paysages en couleurs et en noir et blanc. Dave a commencé à peinturer en 2000 après un séjour d'un an au Brésil. Ses médiums sont l'aquarelle, le fusain, l'huile et l'acrylique. Dave demeure présentement à Grand Barachois,N.B.

Dave Skyrie was born in 1948 and raised in Montreal where he graduated with a degree in Arts from Concordia University. A member of the AAAPNB (Association acadienne des artistesprofessionnel du Nouveau-Brunswick),the Shediac Artists Painters Society and the New Brunswick Writers Federation, Dave has published two small books of poetry as well as having his poems appear in various Canadian magazines. Dave trained as a photographer in Moncton, N.B. and enjoys photographing landscapes in both color and black and white. Dave started painting in 2000, after a one year stay in Brazil and works in watercolors, acrylic, charcoal and oil. Dave currently resides in Grand Barachois with his wife and son.
