Chris Nichols '78 called Charlie Morrison (on our Last Call Committee) on 15 Sep to tell us of the death of his brother and our classmate, Gordon Nichols. Gordon,. of North Augusta, GA, died in his home of apparent cardiac arrest.  Ironically his father died in Aiken, NC, about the same time. Gordon was single and will probably be buried in his hometown of Aiken. His brother is interested in hearing from any 65ers who can share anecdotes of Gordon' time at the Academy.

No details are yet available on services. A Lucky Bag photo of Gordon is here. Gordon was in 7th Company during our first class year and is found on page 81 in the Lucky Bag.

Our Last Call Committee is sad to report that Rob Brown (15th Co.) died in his sleep on 15 August of an apparent heart attack. Rob's wife, Kaye, has asked for donations to the USNA AA Class of 1965 Admissions Project in lieu of flowers. Rob and Kaye's home is in Spring, Texas, and her phone number is 281-376-4264. There is no known email address.  Details on funeral arrangements are not yet known. We will let you know as soon as they are available.

Sadly, the rest of the story is that Rob's sister died ten days ago, so the family is in deep sorrow. Your prayers are much appreciated.

Jim Stewart passed away at around noontime Sunday, 3 July from asbestos initiated lung cancer. Jim's illness was service connected, the result of asbestos exposure in Navy submarines and shipyards as a junior officer. As far as anyone knows, Jim never smoked. All members of the family were there at the end. Jim had essentially been unable to communicate for the previous 36 hours.

One friend of Jim wrote that he was a great person, always willing to help out anyone and valiant to the end as he continued to sing in his church choir until three weeks ago.

Some of you may know that his first wife, Bonnie, died in a tragic accident a few years ago. Jim remarried this past year, and he and his new wife Donna had just recently moved into a new home. Donna’s phone number is 703-724-4833. Jim's older daughter is Susan (husband Jeff) and the younger daughter is Buffy (husband Rick). Jim's brother David is also there, as well as his dad (also a Jim). David is a medical doctor and minister. If you call, you might get any one of them on the phone.

A memorial service for Jim was held at 1500 on Friday, July 8 at the St. Francis Episcopal Church, 9220 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, Virginia 22066. There was a nice turnout of local ‘65ers there and some wearing kilts.

Sincere condolences from the class go out to Donna and the Stewart family. Jim Stewart’s widow, Donna, has provided her new address and phone number: 44416 Livonia Terrace, Ashburn, VA 20147; 703-724-4833

Obit from Shipmate: STEWART, FINLAY ""JIM"" III (AGE 61) LCDR USN (Ret.) Of Ashburn, VA and formerly of Reston, VA on Sunday, July 3, 2005 at his residence. Beloved husband of Donna Montgomery Stewart loving father of Susan Morse, J.D. and Buffy Burton son of Finlay J. Stewart, Jr. brother of Carole Stewart Beins and David Andrew Stewart, M.D., MDiv., and grandfather of Ricky. He was preceded in death by his first wife Bonnie McPherson Stewart and his mother Elma Bowler Stewart. Memorial services will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 9220 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA on Friday, July 8, at 3 p.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Capitol Hospice, 9300 Lee Hwy., Suite 500, Fairfax, VA 22031 or The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, 1609 Garden St., Santa Barbara, VA 93101 ( Arrangements by MONEY AND KING FUNERAL HOME."

Official notice was also received from the Department of Defense over the weekend that LCDR Erik S. Kristensen '95, son of RADM and Mrs. Ed Kristensen, was killed while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. He was killed when the MH-47 that they were aboard crashed in the vicinity of Asadabad in Kumar Province on June 28. Erik had been assigned to SEAL Team Ten, Virginia Beach, VA.

The Class sent flowers just as if this fallen hero was one of our own Classmates. John Bishop is taking it for action.

From Ted Krauss: “We've all lost loved ones over the years, and we had some genuine heros in our own Class, but somehow this loss has really affected me. Erik was a wonderful young man, converted from surface warfare to Seals so he could do more, and was destined to be an Olmstead Scholar headed for study in Paris on his next tour. Sam joined Jan and me here for a brief visit just a few weeks ago following Ron Marryott's funeral. Sam was so proud of Erik and looking forward to his return home soon. What a loss.”

Again, we extend our deepest sympathy to Erik’s family, classmates and friends. May we remember them in our prayers.

From Tom Murphy on the Memorial Service for Eric:

THE MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR LCDR ERIK KRISTENSEN’95, SON OF OUR CLASSMATE FROGGY KRISTENSEN & HIS WIFE, SAM WERE HELD AT THE USNA CHAPEL TODAY, TUESDAY, JULY 19TH AT 1000. The Main Chapel was filled by family, friends of the family, classmates of Erik, our classmates, USN SEALS and the Navy chain of command from CINCPAC on down + the upcoming CNO, ADM Mullen. A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial was performed with eulogies from Erik’s classmates, SEAL friends (including CDR Wyman Howard III) and family and the Archbishop for the Military Diocese.

The attendees followed the casket to the USNA cemetery for the funeral service. After the funeral service most attendees came to a reception in Alumni Hall to sign the Visitor’s Book and offer condolences to the family.

More than twenty of our classmates led by Pete Gness attended the services including travelers Pat Donnelly from California and Mike Riley up from Florida. I would like to thank all of those who attended and encourage all other classmates to consider a memorial donation to the memorial scholarship fund in honor of Erik Kristensen in lieu of flowers. This fund would be used in perpetuity to sponsor deserving, future prospective Midshipmen for advanced schooling at a USNA preparatory school.

(See Pete’s note below)

          God bless you all. Murph
