PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT!!!

KIM'S LAW

California Needs State Highway Safety

THIS COULD BE YOU OR YOUR FAMILY

PROBLEM:

TRUCKS WITH OVER-LENGTH SINGLE TRAILERS ARE NOT SAFE FOR USE ON SOME STATE ROUTES.

The original design standard for the California State Highway System was the 55 foot length semi-truck. Due to continual increase in semi-truck lengths, 65 foot semi's are now legally allowed to travel on State Highways, originally designed to accommodate the 55 foot standard.

The term,"OFF-TRACKING", occurs when a semi, too long to safely navigate certain narrow state routes, crosses the center line into the oncoming lane of traffic, endangering public safety and the truck driver.

22% of the California State Highway System is geometrically inadequate to accommodate semi lengths over 55 feet, according to the December 1989 Caltrans Truck Kingpin-To-Rear-Axle (KP-RA) Length State Highway System Evaluation. Affected routes are California's mountain and coastal highways posted by KP-RA warning signs.

Existing "Not Advised" signs are inadequate for commuter or truck driver safety.

SOLUTION:

SB-636 "Kim's Law" proposes Regulatory KP-RA signs be posted in lieu of the existing black and yellow KP-RA Warning "Not Advised" signs which are inadequate for commuter and truck driver safety, and completely unenforceable by the California Highway Patrol.

Kim's Law benefits everyone who travels the mountain and coastal state highway system in California. Until this law passes, you should be very alert on curves while traveling the mountain and costal highways.

The CRASH (Citizens for Reliable And Safe Highways) web site provides complete background information regarding Kim's Law and will allow you to make an informed decision about this public safety issue, including tractor-trailer terminology which truck drivers can use to measure their own KP-RA. It's been found that over-length semi-truck drivers are also endangered while on these geometrically inadequate state routes.

If you have been "hit by", or had a "near miss", with a semi-truck on a state highway please send e-mail of your experience while at theCRASH website.
