Tantalum was discovered by Anders Ekeberg in Sweden, 1802. The name comes from the Greek work "Tantalos" meaning "Father of Naobi." Tantalum does not react with air or water under normal conditions because of it's thin, protective layer of oxide.
Tantalum metal has a lot of important uses. It is used for making steel because of it's high melting point, high strength, and and high ductility. Tantalum wires were the first wires used in light bulbs! Since it is immune to body liquids, and the body tolerates it well, it is also ofted used for surgical use.
