Shortly after the Tenth Angel was defeated, everyone from NERV, including Asuka, Rei and Shinji, headed around the immediate area to make sure that the falling angel had not done any real damage. The three EVA pilots were assigned a low priority and minimal danger area, due to their age, or at least that is what Gendo Ikari thought. "This sucks. We should be helping out in one of the other areas," Asuka muttered. "What sort of danger could possibly come these old abandoned buildings?" "That is Commander Ikari's orders. Even though it is a minimal danger area, it still needs to be secured," Rei replied. Shinji saw that one of the old buildings still had power, via flickering lights. The word written in English on the front of the building made no sense: ENCOM. Shinji pointed it out and turned to the two girls. "I think we had better check that building out. Rei let Misato know where we are heading," Shinji said. "Understood," Rei replied and radioed back to NERV and let Misato know of their situation. The three teen-agers made their way inside the building and saw that lights were still working in the lobby. Rei found a notepad behind the front desk and frowned as she read it. "What is it, wonder-girl?" Asuka demanded. "It is a note written by a Kevin Flynn with the word 'reindeerflotilla' listed and B2-35," Rei replied. Shinji looked over a map and saw how things were laid out. "It's room 35 on the second basement level. It is some sort of lab. I guess we should find out what's going on with that. Rei?" Rei nodded and gave an update to Misato. The three decided against using the elevator and used the map to find the stairs. Asuka removed the bolts from the hinges of the door and the three of them pulled the door out of the doorframe. They quickly proceeded down to the second basement level and found room 35. Entering the room, they saw what appeared to be a group of five lasers pointing from the entrance door wall to the opposite side. Asuka glanced up confused. "What is with that? That makes no sense." Rei found a clipboard with notes attached. She quickly read through the notes and nodded. "Teleportation project. Those lasers are supposed to be able to transport someone from one location to another place on Earth at the speed of light." "Mein gott! That's impossible!" Asuka declared. "Apparently not. Kevin Flynn was the president of the company and used it to travel from one ENCOM building to another," Rei said, as she read more of the notes. Asuka shook her head and headed over to the computer and tried to bring up some files. However the screen blanked out and asked for a password. "A password? How the heck am I supposed to know what they used for a password?" Asuka muttered. "Reindeerflotilla maybe?" Shinji asked mildly. "There had to be a reason he wrote that down." Asuka glanced at Shinji once and typed that word into the computer and pressed enter. Rei quickly radioed back to NERV and reported what they had found. The computer hummed a bit as it processed the password. The three children stared at the screen as it went through several checks. The screen blacked out for a second and then words appeared on the screen. DIGITIZING LASERS ACTIVATED "What?" Asuka got out, right before the three of them were struck in the back by the lasers behind them and digitized. Asuka opened her eyes and noticed that her hand was red and had glowing circuitry lines running up and down it. She sat up and noticed that Rei was nearby glowing a blue color and Shinji was glowing yellow. A closer look showed that it was the circuitry lines running up and down their bodies that were glowing, and not they themselves. Asuka took a look around and rubbed her eyes. The sky was black with no stars and beams of light reached up from the landscape and into the sky. "Where are we?" Asuka demanded. She shook her head and went over to shake Shinji and Rei awake. The two of them looked at Asuka and then themselves. Asuka was pleased to note that Rei looked shocked for the first time she could recall. "Where are we?" Rei asked, mirroring Asuka's earlier question. "I have no idea, but this place makes no sense. There are glowing grid lines on the ground," Asuka replied. "I guess we should find out where we are and how to get back," Shinji muttered. "I think one of those light beams is a place to start," Rei said, as she pointed to one that looked closer. The three pilots found a way that they were on a platform that had a ledge running along all edges save one. The final edge had a wall with a door in it. A button was on one side of the door. Grimacing a bit, Asuka touched the button and the door faded out. "That was different," Rei muttered. "Let's get out of here," Asuka stated. "This place is really starting to creep me out. The other two nodded and they left through the door. After all three had passed through, the door rematerialized. Asuka gave it an odd look and shook her head. "This technology is really advanced. I wonder why it hasn't been used before," Asuka muttered. "It might have something to do with why we are glowing," Rei replied. "As soon as we find out where we are, we might have an answer." The three of them searched the building and found steps leading down to the ground level and an opening in the wall, letting people go in and out without problems. Rei stopped and took a look at a group of handlebars floating in mid-air near the entrance. "I have found a faster way for us to travel than walking," Rei stated. "These handlebars can form some kind of motorcycle around us, if we go into a specified stance while holding them." Asuka and Shinji went over to where Rei was at and saw the pictures on the walls about how the handlebars were to be used. Asuka shook her head in disbelief. "This place is really starting to weird me out," Asuka said while holding up her hand. "Let's use them. I have no idea how far it is to that beam of light," Shinji said, as he grabbed a handlebar that had yellow highlights. Asuka shook her head, sighed and grabbed one with red highlights. Rei looked through them, before she found one in blue. The three of the got into the proscribed stance and motorcycles of their respective color formed around them. They took off through the opening towards the nearest beam of light with Shinji leading. Shinji saw that there was display that showed a picture of Rei and Asuka. "Rei? Asuka? Can you hear me?" Shinji asked. "Yes," came a unisoned response. "Apparently we have some kind of voice activated radio," Shinji said. "How fast are we going?" Rei took a look at the controls and shook her head. "I can not tell you. I have no idea what some of these displays mean. All I can tell you is that we are travelling very fast." A light blinked and a beeping noise alerted Shinji that something was amiss. He glanced down and then looked forward. He saw what looked like the wreckage of a glowing tank. He quickly turned the bars hard and the cycle did an immediate ninety-degree turn. He quickly got back on course and noticed that Asuka and Rei had done the same thing. "That should have killed us," Asuka stated in shock and a bit of fear. "Instant ninety degree turns without any sort of inertia affecting us? This isn't possible." "It seems that we are operating under different rules of physics," Rei said calmly. "Yeah. Right. Ones that put neon lights across us like a printed circuit board? I hope we get some answers soon," Asuka said. Back in the real world, Misato arrived at the ENCOM building with Kaji, Ritsuko, and some NERV guards. Misato took a deep breath and gave some orders. Gendo was at NERV HQ upset that a low danger area had such a nasty surprise hidden within it. "Squad One, Four and Five search this entire building for any sort of information. Squad Two prevent anyone from entering this building. Squad Three you're with us. We're heading down to room 35 on the second basement level." After Misato gave the commands, she angrily panted and stormed into the building. Ritsuko, Kaji, and a group of ten men followed her. A group of thirty men also entered the building and broke into three ten-man teams to search the building. "What was the last thing that was reported?" Ritsuko asked. "They had found some sort of active teleportation device and were trying to access a computer to get information from it," Misato hissed in reply. "Teleportation? I didn't think that was possible," Ritsuko said in shock. "Asuka just typed in 'reindeerflotilla' into a computer and the next thing that I heard was Asuka yelling 'what' and some strange humming. After that the radio kicked off and I couldn't raise them since." "They might have activated the teleporter and are now out of range," Ritsuko mused, thinking frantically. "We have to find out where they went to and get them back." "Regardless of anything else. This place is being confiscated by NERV. An active teleporter is way too dangerous to leave unguarded. If an Angel got to it and used it, it could get into NERV before we would know it," Misato declared with a lot of force. "Right. I wonder how this is going to look to the UN?" Ritsuko mused and then shook her head. Misato pulled out her radio and spoke into it. "Teams One, Four and Five how goes the search and assessment?" "Team One here. This building is pretty much undamaged by anything that has happened so far. It only has a few areas without power and those are due to blown fuses. We are still hunting for hard files." "Team Four here. We have determined that this building's outer wall was made of some strange alloy that is tougher than anything we currently use is. It can be secured fairly easily." "Team Five here. We have found the personnel office and have run into something strange. We have a listing of people that worked here. We radioed back to headquarters and found out that without exception, every one vanished without a trace. There were no bodies and the disappearances were a day before Second Impact." Misato blinked at that revelation. "Somehow they knew of Second Impact and fled. They fled somewhere where Second Impact wouldn't reach them." "That is our supposition and headquarters' as well," Team Five's leader radioed back. "Thank you Team Five. Keep searching and radio back to headquarters. I want to know everything about ENCOM. Every dirty little secret and who all worked for them needs to be on my desk as soon as possible." "Roger, Major." Misato killed the radio and looked at Ritsuko. "Ideas?" "Not a one," Ritsuko said, shaking her head. "We'll have to crack into the computers here. I'd rather set up a line into that lab and then use the MAGI while we're all safe from whatever surprises might be hidden here." Back at NERV, Gendo Ikari was rubbing his forehead. Something that should have turned out to be a very safe routine had just blown up spectacularly. He sighed heavily and went into the room where he would talk to a small part of Seele. Soon, the hologram Lorenz Keele and four other men appeared at the table Gendo was sitting at. Gendo only knew the other four by the names of the colors that illuminated them. "What do you want Ikari?" Keele demanded. "There has been a complication. All three EVA pilots have vanished via a teleportation system set up by ENCOM," Gendo stated. "Furthermore, signs point that all ENCOM personnel and immediate family have used this system to evade Second Impact and are hiding elsewhere until Third Impact is over." "This was not foreseen," Mister Green said. Mister Red jumped in. "That group has to be found and brought back here or killed. There is a good chance that their being missing like that could halt Third Impact." "If they were dead, it wouldn't matter. But now, we need to find out where they went," Mister Yellow said. "The now Major Katsuragi ordered a group to get any and all information on ENCOM. Maybe there is some clue as to where they went," Gendo reported. "Good. We will send what we can of ENCOM as well," Keele stated. "We have a bit of time, so we can get two new EVA pilots ready as well. I believe a Toji Suzahara will be useful for Eva-04 after some preparations." "Very well. I shall inform you when we have found out just where they went," Gendo replied. Keele frowned. "I recall something about the president of ENCOM, Kevin Flynn. He was dismissed from his job as a computer programmer and then brought back and moved to president, when it was revealed that his ideas had been stolen from him by the then current president. When Flynn was made president, the company made leaps and bounds afterwards and he proceeded to buy up all the ENCOM stock, after the revelations about the previous president, Dillinger. I thought about approaching him, but dismissed it. He would not understand what needs to be done. Dillinger would have been a perfect choice." "So he's the one who probably came up with the idea," Gendo mused. "I'll need a psyche profile on him as well and maybe some clue will be there on how they vanished." "You will have it. Now leave Ikari. We all have work to do," Keele stated. The holograms faded out, leaving Gendo alone in the room harboring dark thoughts about ENCOM and their president. Back in the computerized world, the three pilots made their way quickly across the landscape. The slowed down and stopped, when they saw a huge circular tower. A large curved wall was connected to each side, and the three of them could tell it encircled a large area. After a moment, the three cycles vanished and left the three teens standing. They all stared up at the tower. Asuka shook her head. "That can't be real. It looks like a three-dee computer image. Half the cylinder is connected higher than the other half. And the ring around the top has no visible means of support. It should collapse," Asuka softly said in disbelief. "We will not find out anything by standing out here. I can see at least four of those beams, like the one we were heading to, but they do not seem to be active," Rei stated. "They do not seem to be lit up like the others and appear a bit dull" Shinji sighed and headed fort the tower. The two girls followed him. As they walked, the handlebars vanished. "Where did they go?" Asuka demanded in shock. "I have no idea," Rei replied. Shinji put it out of his mind and approached, what looked to be the front door. Rei and Asuka stood just behind him. There seemed to some sort of sensor panel next to the door on Shinji's right. Shinji waved his hand in front of the panel and waited. A second later, the door faded out and a man dressed similarly to the three pilots was standing there and smiling. The main difference was that he was wearing a helmet. "Greetings programs! I am Flynn," the man said. "Huh? Programs? What is he talking about?" Asuka muttered. Flynn heard the comment and his smile faltered. "You're not... Okay, it looks like we might be in trouble." "Where are we?" Shinji asked. "That will take some time to explain, and I'd rather not do it with the door open. Come in," Flynn said, and moved out of the doorway. The three teenagers looked at each other. Shinji screwed up his courage and entered the building. Despite doubts crossing her face, Asuka followed Shinji and Rei followed her. Flynn stood a bit of distance away from the three and led them through the corridor and gave an odd look at Shinji and Asuka. He stopped next to a door leading into a bare room. "Seems like that the three of you have been affected by this place, but first some standard security procedures. Please enter that room," Flynn said. Shinji nodded and entered followed by the two girls. As soon as the tri entered, the door appeared and locked them in. They were exposed to a flickering red line of light that went up and down their bodies. A bit later, a pleasant feeling went through all three of them as a cascade of white energy flowed over them. Then a cascade of green energy flooded the room and the three of them felt like their minds were being taken apart and put back together. Old half-forgotten memories were now crystal clear and all three of them felt a bit happier than before. The door opened up and Flynn motioned for them to come outside. "The virus scan and defrag should have made you feel better," Flynn stated. "We are not computer programs," Asuka said, a bit irritated, and her lines glowed a bit brighter. "Actually, right now, you are. You are inside the Internet or cyberspace," Flynn said with amusement. "What?" Asuka demanded, as the other two pilots looked on in shock. "Yep. You are beings of energy and can be affected like a computer program. The virus filter prevents things like the common cold or flu from getting loose here in the digital world," Flynn said. "The three of you had something really strange in common. It looked nasty. I kept a copy of it to use just in case. Since you three are here, it means we might be in danger from Third Impact." "We're the pilots of the Evangelion Units that fight the Angels," Shinji stated. "If we don't get back before the next Angel attack..." "Don't worry. You have time," Flynn said. "I think it is time to do a debriefing on what's going on in the outside world and bring you up to speed on what ENCOM did and why, along with what this place is really like. I'll show you the city later. We really are in danger. Those fossilized geezers at Seele won't be taking your vanishing lying down, and they won't leave us alone until we either join with them or die." "You acted like a guard just by yourself?" Asuka asked. In answer to that question, a trio of people walked in. A man and woman with blue circuitry lines were holding each other at the waist and a young man with white circuitry lines walked a bit in front of them. "These are my friends Alan and Lora Bradley and their son Jet. Jet is the one in white," Flynn said with a bit of amusement. "My wife, son and daughter are in the city. Alan still has some problems with the two of us being together, since my wife is his cousin." Alan looked up at the ceiling and shook his head. "Lora? Any idea what that virus was?" Alan asked. "It wasn't a computer virus and it wasn't a human disease that I'm familiar with," Lora replied. "I don't know what it was, but its removal was necessary. If it was left alone, it would have caused the three of them immense pain and eventually self-destruction." Flynn led the group to a small conference room and motioned for everyone to sit down. He passed out a cup with a glowing liquid in it. "Where to begin?" Flynn mused. "As to the anti-virus and defrag subroutines used on you, I was the one who created those and it dealt with things that aren't normally considered computer viruses and designed specifically to work on Users or humans. There was this one girl who suffered from narcolepsy and she is pretty much cures of it. It might have been something along those lines that the three of you were infected with. Now what do you want to know?" "How about ENCOM and why you are here?" Shinji asked. "The glowing lines on us are another question." Flynn nodded. "It started back when ENCOM had something called the MCP or Master Control Program. I was originally digitized, since the MCP knew that since I had a higher password, I would become a major threat. He or it tried to have me killed in this world via games I created. I helped Alan and Lora's programs, Tron and Yori, defeat the MCP and was made president of the company. After it got out what Dillinger had done in moving up the ranks, the stock of ENCOM started dropping and I used my money to buy up ENCOM stock and keep it from going bankrupt. I became the sole owner of ENCOM. I wanted the digitizing laser to be kept safe from those who would misuse it or not use it when necessary. Little did I know..." "What did this Dillinger do?' Rei asked. "He took other people's ideas and passed them off as his own to get promoted," Flynn replied. "I was the one who created a lot of video games. I was doing it in my spare time to start my own company and the MCP stole them and gave them to Dillinger. I found out later that the MCP had done this to others and I quickly hired those people. They became some of my most loyal employees. Although Alan is the one I bounce ideas off of. He's no yes-man. The downside is that he will call my ideas crazy." "You need something to keep you grounded," Alan said. "This digitizing of all ENCOM employees has to be the wildest idea you ever had." "Maybe, but there was not much choice and you know it," Flynn replied in a somber tone. "I don't understand," Shinji said. "Seele. They are a group of old men who have been manipulating society to achieve their ends. About eighteen years ago, I became aware of Seele and their plans. I found out that they stopped any and all sort of space exploration, since it would have humans away from Earth and their little experiment. About fourteen years ago, they started in on their final plan." "Fourteen years ago?" Asuka repeated in shock. "That was the time of Second Impact." "Yes. I let all my employees know that a disaster was in the offing and finally revealed a way to weather the upcoming storm by moving to the digital world until after Third Impact is over and done with," Flynn said. "Third Impact? Don't you mean Second Impact? We're fighting to prevent Third Impact," Asuka demanded. Flynn sadly shook his head. "No. Third Impact. You are not fighting to prevent Third Impact, but to initiate Third Impact the way Seele wants it to go. It is through their actions that Second Impact happened. They had captured the First Angel and used what they called the Lance of Longinus to initiate Second Impact. I don't know where that thing came from, but the real Lance of Longinus was just an ordinary spear and is kept in a museum. They must have found that giant pig-sticker in Antarctica." Flynn shook his head and continued. "At any rate, since I knew of the digital world, I came up with an idea and bounced it off Alan and let him know of Seele. He thought I was insane with my idea, but with Seele planning on offing all of humanity for their little experiment, we really didn't have a lot of options." "Tell me about it," Alan grumbled. "We had to work round the clock on that idea." "We managed to pull it off though," Flynn said with a smirk. "We moved here and hid several dedicated servers around the world to prevent us from being killed by having the computers shut off." "You said that Seele intends to off humanity..." Rei began. Flynn gave a long-suffering sigh. "They want to merge all of humanity into one being as the Eighteenth Angel. They don't care that no one but them wants to do this and have moved to block humans from getting away from them. The reason they didn't block this stunt of mine was that they didn't know about it. I kept it secret from everyone for a couple of years until the time of Alan and Lora's marriage and I got drunk and spilled the beans to Alan about the digital world." "At first I thought it was just the alcohol talking, but when I confronted Flynn later about what he said, his face paled and he flinched and tried to pass it off as nothing," Alan informed the group. "I knew that something was up and I dragged Lora and Gibbs into forcing Flynn to tell us the truth." "Yes, you did. I was stunned about what Flynn had told us about the computer system and how the digitizing laser was used on him," Lora said. "Flynn turned out to be the first human test subject. We weren't even up to using lab rats yet. The MCP decided to use it on Flynn." Flynn waved it off. "The MCP was unethical in every sense of the word. It wasn't your fault and it proved to be a good thing in the end. The MCP tried to take over from humanity and wound up giving us a way to escape the genocide of the human race." Flynn looked at the children and smirked. "You might as well drink. You're going to need it." The three pilots looked at each other and then the drink. Rei was the first to drink the liquid. The lines on her body started glowing brighter as she drank. Seeing as their was no harm to Rei, Asuka and Shinji also followed suit and their lines also glowed a bit brighter. "What is that? I have never tasted anything like it," Asuka said. "Good isn't it? It is the standard fare of programs and beings living in this world. There is no solid food or other types of drinks. Just that," Lora said. "What about eating properly to prevent malnutrition?" Rei asked. "You are currently energy held in a pattern," Lora said. Flynn let out a chuckle and shook his head in amusement. "Human bodies produce many types of waste byproducts. The bodies you currently have only produce one type of waste byproduct. That byproduct is energy or in this case light." "I do not understand," Rei said, shaking her head. "The boots and gauntlets are the only clothes you three are wearing. That is your skin, even though it looks like you are in a Lycra outfit." "What?!" Asuka demanded, and the lines on her body glowed brighter. Flynn glanced at Asuka in amusement. "It's true. That's your body. You aren't wearing any clothes. The lines produce light, just like a human body produces body heat. It is far more efficient than the human body, so there is no need for the other waste byproducts." Lora gave Flynn a sour look. "Flynn has a white cloth wrapped around him and his torso, along with Alan's, is covered in armor. All of us are wearing helmets, but he is right. Flynn, what was the point in telling them that?" "If they are here, they need to know the truth about themselves," Flynn said airily. "You could have come up with a better way to tell them," Lora ranted. Flynn gave a shrug. "Maybe. But, it gets things out of the way. Besides, they traveled here not knowing about it, so they have put it into their mind that they are wearing Lycra outfits. I'm informing them of the facts, not that it will make much difference. I now need to talk about the colors they have." "Colors?" Rei asked. "What about our colors?" "Blue is common and most programs and humans will be that color. Yellow is interesting. It is usually only for administrative programs or independent programs. There are a few yellow Users here, mostly the personnel managers. If you three were programs, I would say Shinji was your controller. He would tell you where to go and what to do." "And red?" Asuka asked. "You are the first User that has shown up red. ICP and security programs show up red," Flynn replied with a shrug. "ICP?" Asuka asked, feeling a bit better after Flynn's revelation. "Intrusion Counter-Measure Program. Red is for combat programs for the most part," Flynn said. "As a User, you can do things most programs can not do. Those discs that you all have are the main weapons here. They act like the stereotypical boomerang and are used to kill or derez others. One shot will usually kill a program. Users are more resistant, but they can still be killed. If you notice, Jet is white. That is not common at all and there are only a very few who have that color. There are no programs that color. I can change my color at a thought, but I choose to remain blue." Lora rubbed her temples and shook her head. "Yeah. He once showed up glowing pink. It threw a lot of programs into disarray and irritated the people of the city." "We were being attacked and I had to throw the invading force off a bit," Flynn informed the children. "It worked. Now back to Seele. Since you three are their main pawns and vanished using the digitizing laser, they will investigate and maybe find out about us." "I'm sorry," Shinji said. "Don't worry about it. We've been preparing for fourteen years now in case Seele did find out about us. We have a lot of plans in place and we think we can hold them off until Third Impact happens," Flynn replied. "You are just going to let everyone else die?" Asuka asked in disbelief. "We can't save everyone. If we had tried Seele would have found out and destroyed this method to keep all of humanity on Earth. We chose to live here and stay away from Third Impact. Our choice, but Seele won't accept it," Flynn said with a heavy sigh. "We really should get you three back into the real world, but I can't see condemning children that I know to fight and die. Yes, I'm sure there are other children out there, but again it is necessary to harden the heart. Seele doesn't care."
