A friend found these little guys on the ground after
their nest had accidentally been destroyed.
When
she called me for help, of course (since I'm a big
sap) I told her to bring them on over. They
were
very cold when I got them and I didn't expect
them
to survive the night, but they're really thriving!
I didn't have my camera when the little ones arrived,
so these pictures start on Day 3 after I got them.
(Lots of pictures here... may take some time to load.)

Sleeping quietly when I first took the cover off their makeshift
nest...

And WIDE AWAKE after I jostled them around a little bit.
FEED US!!!

Yummy!

Little Petunia... the runt of the "litter."

That's Petunia on the far right.

Very full and sleepy after a morning meal
(one of many throughout the day).

Our little Miss Petunia snoozes away...

... while one of her more vocal siblings demands MORE
FOOD!

 |
 |
 |
 |
|

They're starting to fill up more of their nest space now.
Little Petunia is second from the right,
sprawled across everyone else.

Sooooooo sleepy... at least until they realize it's time to
eat.

We're starving!!! Heeeelllllpppp!!!

Even Petunia is getting in on the "FEED ME" act!

"Everybody in formation: butts in, heads out!"

This is how I was greeted first thing this morning.
"Hello out there?
We'd like some service, please! NOW!"

Getting more feathers, but still not exactly CUTE yet...

Little Miss Petunia is really starting to grow!

The babies are getting bigger and moving around a bit
more now, so I moved them to a new set-up. This way,
if they fall out of their "nest," they won't get very far.

Their feathers are really coming in now!

Poor us... we're wasting away to nothing down here!

Doing an impression of an ostrich...

A handful of babies!
(Excuse the mess, they'd just finished eating.)

Today the babies are going to start learning that there's
more to the world than just our kitchen, so I put some sticks and a tree branch in with them.

And it's now safe to say these little guys are definitely
house finches.

We have a daredevil in the group! Today when I was feeding
them breakfast, this little guy hopped onto my shirt, then flapped/crawled up to my shoulder for a better view.

He's also decided that he should always be ABOVE the other
babies, so here he is perched on a branch...

... and here he is perched ON his siblings!

REALLY looking like house finches now!

Playing "King of the Mountain" with the lid of their cage.

Today the babies moved into their next new home!
They're adjusting like pros and really like the high perch!

A milestone for Petunia!
The other four babies are all flying now (not well, but they're
working on it), but today was the first time Petunia was able to perch on a branch!

Trying to decide if they have time to fly off in four different
directions before I have a chance to shut the top of their cage.

(Since they're looking like real birds now and not changing on a daily basis anymore,
I'm going to cut the updates down to once or twice a week.)

Just chillin' on the edge of their cage!

Petunia's preparing for lift-off!!!

Using the plant in the bathroom to practice for life
in the wild...

A little something we call "House Finch Madness" - when
they all take off and fly in circles over the bathtub.
Look out below!

Well, this is it! The babies are ready to move
outside
and then off they go to live happily every after!

The very last "indoors" picture before the big move.

Callie acting as the official building inspector.

The babies had NO trouble settling into their new home.

Bye-bye birdies!

The first little guy taking off out of the open cage
(and that's
the only picture I have of their send-off
because the
second we opened the cage:
POOF, they
were OUTTA HERE).

FREEDOM!
