Swami Chidananda was Swami Sivananda's chosen successor. Chidananda fully lived & taught his guru Sivananda of
Rishikesh's message "Serve, Love, Meditate, Realize." Chidananda has often been called the "St. Francis of India" because
of his devotion to the welfare of all beings. Swami Chidananda was fully dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor, &
particularly the lepers. His guru Sivananda founded the Divine Life Society in Rishikesh India, on the banks of the
Ganges in 1936. Yoga spread around the world through his disciples; Swami Chidananda, Swami Vishnudevananda, Swami Satchidananda
and Swami Radha to mention a few. Chidananda is the root guru of Lilias Folan. Swami Chidananda was sent by Sivananda to teach
yoga & Vedanta in Europe, Canada, America & South America 1959, on a tour that lasted two years. He visited the U.S.
fifteen times. Swamiji was an ideal person to teach the dharma in the West; he was a S. Indian Brahmin educated in English
speaking Christian schools & who was familiar with Western culture & religion from an early age. Swami Sivananda &
Chidananda were close to Anandamayi Ma, Laurel's guru. Laurel knew Chidanandaji from the many times he was visiting Ma at
Her ashram in Hardwar India, while she was there in the late 70's & early 80's.
The day will include stories about Chidanada's life and inspirational Yogic teachings that Swami Chidananda taught
in the West. We'll immerse ourselves in yogic practices of hatha yoga, pranayam, yoga nidra, chanting, meditation, live music,
theatric reenactments from Chidananda & Sivananda's life. The day will conclude around 5:30 pm with a communal vegetarian
meal of kitchiri. In the evening we will have satsang (meditation & chanting) from 7 to 9 pm continuing the theme of Sivananda.
$5 donation for satsang is appreciated.
"The wise method is to start your day in the
inner being, dwelling upon this silence, being that silence, & knowing that you are that peace." - Swami Chidananda
