The JunkYard
Our Purpose

Home | Our Purpose | Contact Us | About Us

The purpose of The JunkYard: to engage the efforts of local artists and art students in the construction of their museum. Once open, the exhibits will be large climbable structures that can be enjoyed by everyone of all ages.

The purpose of utilizing the skills of students: to instill in each student a sense of pride that they are contributing to a truly unique work of public art.

The purpose of the climbing structures: to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, develop logical reasoning and problem solving skills, engage the climbers in social interaction and team building exercises.

The purpose of the programs: to teach the visitor not to focus on the end result, but to focus on the creative process that goes into making a work of art, piece of sporting equipment, and musical instrument in our JunkYard Art, JunkYard Sports, and JunkYard Music programs.

By teaching our visitor how to unlock their inner artist, we are then teaching them to think outside of the box when approaching challenges in math and science; as well as any other subject they tackle academically or personally.

Table leg project completed by Cordova High School and Cordova Middle School

The Magdovitz family generously donated these table legs to be painted by the city school students. The students took great time and effort, as you can see, to individualize their own table leg. The end result is simply outstanding.

Once construction of The JunkYard is underway, the finished table legs will be installed as permanent railing around the fountain in the entrance. The fountain is designed to be the very first point of interest in the museum. It will be constructed out of found objects and powered by the visitor using bicycle pedals.
