Taft High School Symphonic Band
LAUSD Band and Orchestra Festival

This week Taft will be hosting two LAUSD Music Festivals. The Band Festival will be on Thursday, May 15, and will include the following schools: Granada Hills H.S., Hale Middle School, Canoga Park H.S., Reseda H.S., Polytechnic H.S., and Taft.

The Orchestra Festival will be on Friday, May 16, and the participating schools will be Marshall H.S., Hale Middle School, El Camino H.S., Canoga Park H.S., King Middle School, and Taft.

The schedule for both days is identical: all participants are to arrive at Taft between 3:30 and 4:30pm, and the first performance begins at 4:30pm. Each school performs individually and is judged by a panel of LAUSD Music Judges. There will be a dinner break from 6:10 to 6:50pm, and then performances resume starting at 7:00. After all schools have performed, there will be a combined performance of all the schools which should start at about 8:40pm. The festival should be over at 9:00pm.

Now that you know what your students will be doing, here is what we need the parents to do.

These Festivals provide an opportunity for the Taft Music Department to make some money. We will have a "Bake Sale" so the kids can buy munchies - candy, cookies, cupcakes, chips, etc., whatever you can donate. These can be sent to school with your kids, and will be held in the music room until 4:30, or you can drop them off yourself. Also, we will make money by selling them Pizza and drinks for dinner. Thursday there will be approximately 250 students participating, and on Friday there will be about 200.

In terms of parent volunteers, here is what we anticipate needing for each day:

  1. 4 parents to be at Taft Hall at 3:30 - 4pm to help set up for dinner, man the Bake Sale table, and to handle any such things that might come up.
  2. At 5:30pm we will need at least 8 parents to help serve dinner and do any clean up when dinner is over.
  3. 2-3 parents to man the Bake Sale table from 7-9pm.

Karen Schreiber and Mr. Burch will be shopping for drinks and supplies on Tuesday, 5/13, around 4:00pm, and would be grateful if someone else could help them too.

It is a big help to know ahead of time who can be there to help, and who will donate items for the Bake Sale, so please contact Karen Schreiber, and tell her what you can bring, and when you you can serve. (It doesn't have to be on the same day your student is performing, and you can even help both days if you want.)
