Dear Mr. Burch:

My name is Lynn Tivens. I played in the Taft High Band and Stage band from 1967 through 1969. I was a member of the Stage Band/Jazz Band that went to the Hollywood Bowl and participated in the Battle of The Bands. I was a trombone player in the band ...

I wanted to pass along some very sad news to the Taft High School community. I have managed to stay in close touch with Ken Kamp, a former band and music director at Taft over the years, and I learned just last week that he is dying of Cancer. He told me that he doesn't know exactly how much longer he has to live but it's a matter of months.

He is at peace with his situation and fully prepared to enter the next life, but I know that he would appreciate hearing from as many of his former students as possible.

He was a very interesting individual, a wonderful sax player ,and an outstanding resource of Jazz music. In all of my music career, he was the one person that stood out as an example of everything worth performing for.

My memories of the days I spent at Taft high will always have some memory of Ken Kamp because he made you want to be a better musician and person.

I am glad that the Taft High Band website has a link to you and I hope you will be able to pass along this message to everyone who still remembers Ken.

Sincerely,

Lynn B. Tivens
Class of 1969

Note: Mr. Kamp passed away on October 10, 2006.
