Taft performed Saturday October 15, 2005 at the Royal Classic competition at Royal High School in Simi Valley. Performing in the 1A Gold division, our scores were:
Band 36.55Congratulations to the band and color guard!! Band won third place (which is also 3rd in 1A combined Green and Gold divisions) 1 point away from second place. Drum line won first place (1st in 1A) and Color guard won second place (4th in 1A)! [16Oct2005]
Percussion 71.40
Auxillary 39.50
We need volunteers to sell pizza Wednesday's at 3pm sharp. Last week we sold out of 12 pies in 10 minutes!! This is a great money maker for the band. Kent has the tables, cloths, signs, change and coolers full of sodas. The pies are delivered at 3 sharp but he'd like to be set by 2:40 so the kids can see us when they are going to 6th period. If you can be at school by 2:30 or so he could really use your help.
Please turn in your Ralphs club card forms. This is a easy way to get money for the band. All you need to do is give us your Ralphs club number and everytime you shop the band get a portion of what you spend. [16Oct2005]
You need to turn in your practice slip every Monday. This is a big part of your grade. [16Oct2005]
On Monday October 3, 2005, the band will have a music rehearsal in the bandroom during 0 and first periods. We will be learning Let It Whip to play for our wonderful dance team who didn't insist that we learn it last week, the day before our competition. This weekend, Mr. Burch will listen to the judges' tapes from Anaheim and at lunch on Monday, the band must come to Mr. Pease's room and listen to the tapes. This is an important part of improving our field show, so everyone please attend. On Tuesday, there will be no school and no band practice because of Rosh Hashanna and because Al and Natalie say that we need a break. Everyone, please come refreshed and ready to work on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will be down on the field at 7:00 A.M. Please be on time. [02Oct2005]
After competing in Anaheim on Saturday October 1, 2005, the band went to Culver City and the Sony Studios there. They took pictures of us as we played Virgin de la Macarena and marched in place. We will be part of an ad for Propel water, which will be in many major magazines in February 2006. They gave us free food and $2,000 for the band. (Mr. Burch has the check.) It was a great experience. [02Oct2005]
Taft performed at 1:00 pm Saturday October 1, 2005 with the LA Nights field show at Kennedy HS in Anaheim. The scores were: Band 32.6, Auxiliary 33.0, Drumline 49.6. We thank the people at Kennedy for making it such a good experience. We wish that the entire band could have stayed for the awards ceremony and watched other bands perform, but several color guard members stayed and picked up our trophies, which are in the bandroom right now. Band placed third of three. Colorguard placed 2nd of three. Drumline placed 5th of 13. [02Oct2005]
On Friday September 30, 2005, Mr. Burch announced a last-minute gig at the Wells Fargo on Ventura near DeSoto. We played for their grand opening and they made out a check to Taft High School for $1,000. We will receive half of this, and the Booster Club/PTA will receive the other half, which is fine because they give us a lot of money anyway. ;) This was an in-uniform event. It happened during 4th, 5th and 6th periods. Thank you very much to the band parents and to Principal Sharon Thomas, who drove us to the event in their own cars. Thank you very much to Ms. Thomas, who has promised school funds to rent an equipment truck for all gigs, games, and competitions for the rest of the semester. [02Oct2005]
Please write a letter to Parkman Principal Ms. Ann Allocca telling her why Parkman should not discontinue its Music Program and why music is important personally to each and all of us. Her address is:
I don't know if she has an email address -- google couldn't find it -- so this may cost you 37-cents and an envelope. But it's a good cause. [29Sep2005]Ms. Ann Allocca, Principal Francis Parkman Middle School 20800 Burbank Blvd. Woodland Hills, CA 91367
Kellan is collecting clothes and canned good donations for victims of the hurricane. [31Aug2005]
We need at least 4 parents that would like to volunteer to do the fundraising-get a committee going. [20Sep2005]
Ralphs Club donation program. Ask parents, friends, relatives, and neighbors to sign up. They must have a Ralphs Club Card to participate. Taft Band will get 4% of all money they spend at Ralphs when they use their Ralphs Club Card. [25Aug2005]
Marching Band Camp will be 8am-8pm, Monday August 22nd through Friday August 26th
at Taft High School.
There will be a one-hour lunch break noon-1pm,
and a one-hour dinner break 5-6pm each day.
Bring:
We will be practicing marching and music. Hopefully we will get a large number of the pages for the show onto the field. During Hell Week (August 31, September 1-2) uniforms will be issued and shoes ordered. [22Aug2005]
Apparently Rustic Canyon Road, which goes from Sullivan Road (on the mountain crest) down to the camp site, is still impassible. The Camp Josepho web site says:
Camp is still closed except for backpackers. Currently there is no date for the projected reopening of camp or a firm plan for repairs of the road. Check back for updates or call Council (Main Office) at 818-785-8700.
("Council" is Western Los Angeles County Council Boy Scouts of America.) We are looking for an alternative site for our August 21-27th band camp. [01Aug2005]
What, changes already? Of course. After meeting with Mr. Adam Payne, our drill designer, I have made some changes. The Opening has been replaced with a new piece, named 405. The original opening number just didn't have the right tempo to move around on the field. The new 405 does include the "sleaze" section. Melrose Ave. to Sunset Blvd. has been modified and some tempi have been changed. The mallet feature, now named Chinatown, has been shortened quite a bit but the original, longer version is still there in the mallets folder. The last movement, Alvera Street, is also here. There are also new audio files that reflect the changes.

Please note - these audio files are recorded using computer-generated fake instruments. They sound awful but at least they're in tune. Other than a single drum track (for reference) most percussion parts are not included. [31Jul2005]
Just a reminder from Mrs. Levenburg, that ALL BAND FEES need to be turned in ASAP!! If they are not, you will not be allowed to participate in the competitions. [20Sep2005]
Each family is requested to contribute $350 toward the costs of the 2005 Field Show Season. The balance is due by the beginning of school (September 8, 2005). [22Jul2005]
- What is that noise you're trying to make?
- But I like seeing you turn blue.
