Speaking of Marching Band....a special Band Camp is planned for this summer, August 22-28, 2004. (Will not interfere with summer school, which gets out August 17.)
We will be staying at a Boy Scout Camp, Camp Josefo, in the Santa Monica Mountains in the Pacific Palisades area. We will be busy with practicing our music, marching and working with special coaches, and we will have a number of fun activities to participate in. There is a swimming pool, archery range and rifle range. We may go to the beach one day and visit the Santa Monica Pier.
The Scouts provide trained supervisors for these activities, but we would also like to have parents come and stay for the week to help out. Let us know if you are interested. The cost is $20 per day and that includes food. (Which we don't have to cook!) There will be a slight charge for some extra activities. Save those dates.
The first meeting of Jazz Band is Tuesday, February 3rd, 7am (zero period) in the band room. Sweet! We have gigs:
Sign-ups for Jazz Band were January 14th and 15th. There were no auditions, just signups. This year it is all one band -- we will all practice and perform together; there won't be separate performance and non-performance groups. Jazz Band meets "zero period" (7am) every school day. Last class period is Friday June 11, 2004. No final exam.
During Spring Semester band students will tutor music students in the three middle schools which send students to Taft: Parkman, Portola, and Sutter. Volunteer tutoring is free. Parkman volunteer tutoring will be Mondays 3:30-4:30pm. Portola volunteer tutoring will be Thursdays, 3:30-4:30pm.

| Who: | The trip is being planned for the Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. |
| What: | A trip for us to perform and have fun. |
| When: | We would leave Thursday April 1st after school and return on Sunday April 4th. |
| Where: | Hampton Inn, Las Vegas, Nevada |
| Why: | Each group will perform competitively on Friday and have a local community performance on the weekend. Saturday evening there will be a dinner and awards ceremony. Sunday we return to Woodland Hills. The rest of the time will be spent having fun in Las Vegas! |
The trip will cost a total of approximately $300. We need a non-refundable $50 deposit by Friday December 19, 2003. The rest of the money will be paid in installments due after winter break. Remember: If not enough people make the deposit, we will not go and your deposit will be returned to you after winter break. Also, please be advised that although you can make a deposit even if you are currently academically ineligible, should you be academically ineligible at the time of the trip, your money WILL NOT be refunded to you.
Update: $150 due January 30th; $150 due February 27th. A new batch of fund-raising candy has been ordered; the profit is $20 per box to your individual fee towards the Las Vegas trip. Total cost $350.
Don't forget to check your individual accounts for money you have earned on fundraising activities, because they can be applied to these payments.
