Curt Bouterse is een muzikant en instrumentenbouwer die uit de rijke traditie van zijn muzikale familie kan putten. Hij bespeelt
op deze CD zelfgebouwde banjo's, of "banjer" zoals hij ze noemt in een apparte tweevingerstijl.De banjer is fretless
en de voorloper van de latere banjo. Het zijn vooral traditionele nummers die aan bod komen met een sobere begeleiding maar
Bouterse slaagt er toch in om voldoende afwisseling tussen de verschillende nummers te brengen, ook door het gebruik van de
dulcimer en de autoharp. De grootste verrassing is echter dat op deze CD de "Seneca Square Dance" staat, een traditioneel
nummer dat hier gekend is van de film "The Long Riders" met muziek van Ry Cooder. En wat blijkt: deze mijnheer Bouterse
werkte mee aan de soundtrack van de film en bespeelde voor dit nummer een Chinese (!) hammerd dulcimer (in het nederlands:
een hakkebord, een met snaren bespannen platte doos waarbij de snaren met hammertjes aangeslagen worden). 10 van de 18 nummers
zijn traditionals met o.a. "Handsome Molly" en "Scoldin' Wife" die aan Derroll Adams doen denken, "Pretty
Polly" en een heel originele uitvoering van "Angelina Baker/Sally Goodin". Voor de liefhebbers van old-time
en folk is dit een geslaagde CD. (mandokaz)

the use of the dulcimer and the autoharp. The largest surprise is however that on this CD the "Seneca Square dance"
stand, a traditional number which is had here of the film "The lung Riders" with the music of Ry Cooder. And what
proves to be: this sir Bouterse cooperated in the soundtrack of the film and played on for this number Chinese (!) hammerd
dulcimer (in Dutch: hakkebord, with snaren stretch flat box where the snaren with hammertjes are started). 10 of the 18 numbers
traditionals with among other things "Handsome Molly" are and "Scoldin' Wife" that of Derroll Adams do
think, "Pretty Polly" and a very original implementation of "Angelina nurse/Sally Goodin". For the liefhebbers
of old-time and folk this a succeeded CD is.
Everyone has guilty pleasures. I know how hard it is to communicate between individuals but I am innocently amused by the
frequency with which we fail. Translation raises the stakes immeasurably. We all have smiled at the awkward instructions for
an imported product and since I enjoy words so much, I laugh aloud frequently. I ran my Dutch review back through the process
several times: English-Dutch, Dutch-English, English-Dutch, Dutch-English, etc.

It was clearly unfair to expect it to keep up with Dutch-French-Greek-French-German-French-Portuguese-English. (I wanted to
go straight from Greek to German to Portuguese but Babel doesn't fish like that.)
