September 2005 Exhibition: "Stories in Pictures"
works by Patricia Hetzler and Lesley Ann Price
Reception hosted by the Douglas County Writers
Cultural Arts Center, 8652 Campbellton Street, Douglasville
On view through September 30th

South Africa-born artist Lesley Ann Price presents a suite of multiples from her 2003 series, "My Sucker Thumb Story," based on her childhood and later relationships with the African house servants who raised her in an upper class Johannesburg household with her German-born parents during the 1950s and -60s. Illustrations from the frightening boogey man of German fairy tales, the drab geometry of school uniforms, intricate Seshweshwe tribal designs, and a warm palette shaped by the loving guidance of four servants, two men and two women, in the cold black and white world of apartheid combine in Price's engrossing visual saga of memory and history. Literary and literate, she describes a disturbing and beautiful world containing European Christmas decorations, a little girl's ballet lessons and a children's book with Black Sambo images from Colonial Africa.

Patricia Hetzler tells art historical fables in her layered serial compositions like the Women of Substance series, where she quotes images of women from Renaissance paintings, portrayed as surrounded by brilliant graphic geometries of contemporary numbers, signs and symbols. Hetzler's multimedia encounters where text meets texture engagingly juxtapose painting, collage and varied printing techniques. A well known and established artist and arts teacher in Atlanta, Hetzler has taught bookmaking, printing, drawing and mixed media classes at Chastain Arts Center, Spruill Arts Center, Callanwolde Arts Center, and Georgia Tech, and worked as an artist in residence for the school arts programs of Fulton County Arts Council and Georgia Council for the Arts for many years. She studied art and psychology at University of Tennessee (Chattanooga), and papermaking and printmaking at Arrowmont School of the Arts (Gatlinburg). In 2003, Hetzler exhibited in the "A Particular Group of Women" [www.pARTicularWomen.org] holiday show at the Cultural Arts Council in Douglasville. Her work has been presented in gallery and museum exhibitions nationally, regionally and locally as well as displayed with the international touring show, Paper USA-Finland, and is included in many public and private permanent collections throughout Atlanta and the Southeast.
