The Author: Rachel Weininger's interest in magical experiences grew from her own magical childhood. World teacher Krishnamurti was one of her earliest childhood friends, and her school years were spent in such diverse surroundings as a tugboat off Baja California and a Guatemalan rain forest. Rachel now lives in Santa Barbara, California. She has a magical cat named Amber Alexander.

The Illustrator: Artist Barbara Sawyer painted the cover and drew the black-and-white illustrations inside Nightshade. She was born in England, studied foreign languages at Exeter, and taught in Paris, Munich, and at the University of California at Santa Barbara. A graphics designer, she lives in Santa Barbara with her artist husband George and her cat Tigra.
