Barbara Sawyer:

Barbara, the creator
of the lovely color
covers and realistic
black-and-white
drawings for
the books Night-
shade and An Owl
Feather for
Emily, was born in
England. At Exeter
she studied art and
foreign languages,
and she later taught
in Paris, Munich,
and at the Univer-
sity of California at
Santa Barbara. A
graphics designer,
she lives in Santa
Barbara with her
husband George
and her cat Tigra.

Hope Slaughter:

After growing up in
the Black Hills of
South Dakota,
Hope graduated
from college in St.
Paul, Minnesota.
She then moved to
California, where
she now lives by the
ocean in Santa Bar-
bara with her hus-
band and their two
sons. She has been
published in various
children's magazines
and has written the
books A Cozy
Place, Buckley
and Wilberta,
Buckley and Wil-
berta: Forever
Friends, and more.

Deborah Stouffer:

Deborah is a

self-taught artist

and successful

architectural

designer. For

eight years she

worked at Uni-

versal Studios as

a Set Designer

and Art Director;

later she worked

alongside her

husband as a film

maker. She lives in

Santa Barbara,

California, where
she raises her
three kids (who are
often her models)

Chris Strodder:
Chris wrote the
children's book A
Sky for Henry in
the 1980s. In 2000
he wrote  Swingin'
Chicks of the '60s,
a celebration of that
wild era. The book
was praised in many
newspapers, USA
Today, Playboy,
even the National
Enquirer. Chris got
to tour and go on
national TV shows.
He then wrote
Lockerboy (on sale
in 2002) and The
Wish Book (on
sale in 2004). Chris
lives in Marin
County, California.

Lee Wardlaw:

Lee is a former

teacher who lives

in Santa Barbara,

California with

her husband and

two cats. Her

interests include

reading, swimming,

studying philosophy,

and visiting

schools to talk

to kids about

writing. She is the

author of nine

books for young

readers, including

three books about

the character Jeffrey

(Me+Math=Head-

ache, The Eye and

I, and Operation

Rhinoceros

Rachel

Weininger:

Rachel's interest in

magical experiences

grew from her own

magical childhood.

World teacher

Krishnamurti was

one of her earliest

childhood friends,

and her school

years were spent in

such diverse sur-

roundings as a tug-

boat off Baja Cali-

fornia and the rain

forest. Rachel now

lives in Santa Bar-

bara, California.

She has a magical

cat named Amber

Alexandria. Rachel

wrote Nightshade.
