Raku Firing Demonstrations

CLAY! FIRE! ART! LIFE! IS RAKU!  See it all at Crooked Tree Pottery and Studios.  Send us your email address to see a dramatic Raku firing demonstration!  It’s scary, it’s fun, and sociable.

Bring the excitement and fun of a Raku firing to your school or facility! We can bring an organized and safe raku demonstration to you within a 60 mile radius of Cincinnati. Lesson plan available.  The Raku firing demonstration presents opportunities for lessons in art history, ceramics, kiln safety, science, writing, and social studies coupled with hands on activity that encourages teamwork.

Denny Means has studied alternate firing methods for years and he is glad to help your organization with workshops and demonstrations in Pit Firing or Raku Firing.

To paraphrase Paulus Berensohn, I believe that making art and owning artwork is part of our birthright, "and dances anybody can do to heal themselves and the world."  That our encounter with primary materials, such as clay, "can be a connecting bridge ...in the formative forces of life."

What to bring: Five bisqued pots, made of Raku Clay.

Experience the fun and camaraderie of firing your own Raku pots! The workshop theme is Raku firing and the goal is to offer a hands-on experience in this dramatic form of firing pottery.  A further goal is to share a safe, enjoyable day working cooperatively with our fellow pottery people. Plus, you will get to see some great pots, and have a good story of the firing!

Read the Workshop Manual on this site for tips on making pots for Raku.
We will serve a light lunch. Participants may bring a casserole to help out.  Those on special diets will want to bring their own food, or special drink.
