New Pain Drug Gets Conditional OK

Drug giant Merck says the Food and Drug Administration wants more information, but is prepared to approve the company's successor drug to recalled pain reliever Vioxx. The FDA wants data on safety and effectiveness.

Although it will probably take years for final approval, it is good that new COX-2 agents are on the way to the market. Vioxx was a very useful medication in patients with sulfa allergies since those patients should not get Celebrex or Bextra.
