"The day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth..."

"A good name is better than a good ointment, And the day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth." Eccl 7:1 NASB

What do you think Solomon meant by the day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth? I was thinking about this seeing that he didn't have the hope that we have. He didn't have the ability to rejoice in hope as we do, so how would the day of one's death be better than the day of one's birth? For us the day of our death is far greater than the day of our birth.

In contrast for those around us the day of our birth is far greater than the day of our death. Although we do celebrate life at both occasions or we call it a celebration of life. We rejoice at the birth our children and mourn at the death of our parent. We all face loss but we who are in Christ will face life, eternal life that is. We like Paul have "...the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better (Phil 1:23)." Two verses before we read "For us, to live is Christ and to die is gain." We gain heaven in the twinkle of an eye.

For us to be absent from the body is to be present or at home with the Lord (2 Cor 5:8). The day of our death is by far greater than any day we will have here alive in the flesh. For that day we will join our Lord and be in paradise. How awesome that will be to walk and talk with Jesus face to face. Our day of death will be the day we hear those faithful words we long to hear "Well done good and faithful servant enter into the joy of my rest." As the song of praise says "Better is one day in Your court, better is one day in your house. Better is one day in Your court than thousands else where."

Really it is good we don't live that long here on earth. The sooner we go through this life no matter how painful or long it seems we all will have an appointed day to die once and then comes judgment (Heb 9:27). Praise God we will not be judged by our sins, but rather how we lived our lives for Christ. For just as it is appointed for men to die once, Jesus also died once and for all just as it says "so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him (Heb 9:28)."

It also says in 1 Peter 3:18 "For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit." He died once so we would only die once. For we are to consider ourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus (Rom 6:11). We have been given salvation in the name of Jesus and this means we will not go through the second death (Rev 20:14-15).

For many the day of their death will be indescribably worse than any day they had alive, any day with disease, any day with distress and sorrow's, any amount of pain and any day as bad as a day can bring upon someone. That day they will long for Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off their tongues and will cry out "I am in agony in this flame (Luke 16:24)." Since today we know that the day we long for will soon come, Let us say as Paul said in Philippians 1:20

"according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death." We will dwell in the house of the Lord forever so remember "There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal; time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance (Eccl 3:1-4)."

On the day of our death some will mourn while we will be dancing with Jesus in the heavens and will bow and worship at His feet. --Maranatha Lord, Come quickly, Lord!

In His NAME,

It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
