"A Sheep that is Silent" (Part I)
3/03/2004

"He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth." Isaiah 53:7 NAS

Imagine for minute if you will what Jesus the incarnate Christ who was perfect yet without sin who came to earth to live in a body with pains and emotion went through before His accusers. He was accused of crimes He did not commit. He was beaten and spit on and treated horribly bad because of the sinful hatred of men.

Yet He stood in their midst knowing He could call down legions of Angels to destroy those who would torment Him. Even greater than that is the fact that He knew in the first place the tormenting He would go through. He knew He would be falsely accused. He new He would be brought before His accusers at a late night trial while being beaten and spit upon.

He knew He would be found guilty and called a blasphemer. Most importantly He knew He didn't need to defend Himself for He was God and He was perfect. Here in this verse we see that a prophesy that was given 400 to 600 years before the spotless Lamb was to come to save man from His sins, was fulfilled.

We see a picture of Jesus as the Lamb of God who was going to pay the ultimate price for sin. It was exactly as John the Baptist stated, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29 NAS)!" Jesus gave us an example of how we ought to be during the beatings of life from those who attack us falsely and who mistreat us.

In Matthew 26:63-64 we see what Isaiah had written come to pass. It says, "But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God." Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven (NAS)."

Again in Matthew 27:12-14 it says, "And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He made no answer. Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?" And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so that the governor was quite amazed (NAS)."

Jesus faced the ultimate trial knowing He was innocent of all charges. He also knew the end result would bring His Father glory and that the Father was well pleased. Have you ever faced a situation where you needed to be silent before the accusers?

Today know that Jesus knows how we feel to the deepest degree of rejection and hurt and even being beaten. In the next devotional we will share the second part of this and hopefully make application for our lives. May you be filled with His peace today.

In Him Sweet Service,
Adam

It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
